| The Handies Group is a real good intro to hiking the Lake City area of the San Juans. Redcloud was easy but fun. I realllly like the town of Lake City, I will go back. | |

| The hike to the saddle (13,000’) was pretty easy. From the saddle I could see Redcloud Peak for the first time. This was the toughest part of the hike it was 800 feet of vertical in about a half mile although it wasn’t that tough. Once on the red summit I could see Sunshine Peak for the first time and the way the clouds were looking if I didn’t get going I might run into problems on the way back so off I went. I would say that if you wanted to do two easy fourteeners in one day these would be on the top of my list. | |

| Did not encounter snow until we reached the end of the basin at 12,000. The route up to the saddle and remaining ridgeline was snow covered. The snow was mostly frozen, but did posthole a few times. Encountered high winds at the summit, and the temps were extremely cold. Due to amount of snow and temps we opted to forgo Sunshine this time. | |

| Camped at the trailhead and got an early start to bag both Redcloud and Sunshine. Pretty easy hike with nice views from the summit. | |

| This was a beautiful climb what with the wild flowers and all. As you climb that steep scree to the summit, turn around and watch as Uncompahgre comes into view over the ridge. A great scenic mountain. I didn't climb Sunshine this time because the thunder storms were starting. | |

| Redcloud and Sunshine are fun mountains, and very beautiful. I've climbed Redcloud 4 times, Sunshine 3 times. The standard route is gorgeous in wet years. I heartily support the optional descent route (see my photo), provided you are somewhat experienced in route finding and steep slope sliding that is common in the San Juans. From the warning sign, angle northwest down the slope in a straight line toward the spotty tundra below. This should get you over and through most of the cliff bands below. Pay attention and don't drop too quickly. This route is a joyous loop trip back to the trail. I climbed Redcloud from Sunshine in 2003, starting at the Mill Creek trailhead. Very steep, climbs fast and quite solitary. Saw no one until we reached Sunshine's summit. | |

| Fantastic walk along the ridge in the snow, went down via the talus slopes and snow fields, a little tricky picking the route from above, then bushwacked to the river and rejoined the main trial. | ||
