flyinghighpeteRoute Climbed: Silver Creek Date Climbed: October 18, 2003  Sucess!

I did this mountain after climbing Redcloud. It was 60 degrees and not a single cloud in the sky in October! We then went down the scree slope which was awesome!

Steven CrossRoute Climbed: Silver Creek, Southfork-descent route. Date Climbed: September, 26, 2003  Sucess!

After reaching Redcloud we went on to do Sunshine. Not a cloud in the sky this day. This was the first time I have done two 14ers in one day.

The descent route was not hard to find, there is a nice climbers trail down it. after the first switchback it heads straight down the scree slope and there was times I was rock skiing. I just create a rock slide and go with it and use my pole to slow my ascent if I go too fast. It was very fun and we lost elevation very fast. I highly recommend this route if you have a pole or hiking stick. Nothing really scary, just a good fast descent.

Aaron JohnsonRoute Climbed: Mill Creek Trailhead Date Climbed: August 31, 2003  Sucess!

I've climbed Redcloud 4 times, Sunshine 3 times. The most recent climb was from Mill Creek Campground. Routes and reports are pending. Steep, climbs fast and solitary! NICE! Returned same route with a contour of Sunshine's NE face that worked very well.

The Silver Creek route is gorgeous in wet years. I heartily support the optional descent route (see my photo), provided you are experienced in route finding and steep slope sliding that is common in the San Juans. From the warning sign, angle northwest down the slope in a straight line toward the spotty tundra below. This should get you over and through most of the cliff bands below. Pay attention and don't drop too quickly. This route is a joyous loop trip back to the trail.

mtnhiker13Route Climbed: Mill Creek Date Climbed: 08/31/2003  Sucess!

We took a very steep approach to Sunshine from Mill Creek. Very steep. I wasn't having the greatest day so it was a struggle but we made it to the top pretty quickly. Once on top we made the traverse over to Redcloud. People we met were very confused when they saw us returning over to Sunshine for our descent. A very nice day.

Date Climbed: Aug 14, 2003

Easy traverse from Redcloud. Sat a while on the ridge and enjoyed the view, ate, and relaxed. It started clouding up but never did rain.

charmsRoute Climbed: Ridge over "Sun Dog" Date Climbed: August 1, 2003  Sucess!

My wife and I bushwacked our way up to the ridge that leads to "Sun Dog" from the trail were South Silver Creek feeds Silver Creek. We climbed the ridge and scrambled onto "Sun Dog". We crossed over the ridge and descended into the basin below Sunshine. We climbed the rock glacier on the west side of the Sunshine/Redcloud saddle and then followed the trail to the summit of Sunshine. We then descended back down into South Silver Creek and followed the trail down.

mmoerkRoute Climbed: North ridge from Redcloud Date Climbed: July 5, 2003  Sucess!

Climbed up Redcloud via the standard route, then traversed over the easy ridge to Sunshine. Beautiful day. To make things interesting, I descended to the west, and followed the northwest ridge over Sundog for my descent. Interesting route, and a good way to lose the crowds.

A fun route up Sunshine, if you don't mind the steepness! My trip report is available here.

Sunshine is in a beautiful setting. The hike from Redcloud is a lark but the views are different than Redcloud. A worthwhile hike!

GrantRoute Climbed: Silver Creek - 10,400 Date Climbed: Aug 4, 2001  Sucess!

Sunshine was a mile and a half to the South of Redcloud and 500 vertical feet from the saddle to the peak. Reaching the summit was a piece of cake.

After about ten minutes on the summit I was headed back to Redcloud and then back down to the trailhead.

wayneaflickRoute Climbed: East Ridge Route from the Mill Creek Trailhead Date Climbed: July 3, 1997  Sucess!

I started up the creek to the north but soon realized I needed to get out of the canyon. I proceeded along the edge of the canyon until it turned west. I then climbed west up rocks to timberline. Upon reaching timberline I could see the entire route. I crossed the broad east ridge and ended up getting in trouble on the left side. I backtracked back to the ridge and proceeded up the center of the ridge and found an excellent trail that led to the summit. Comming down included a glissade down the summit ridge and a long walk back to the trailhead. Having gotten lost twice, I spent 14 hours on the trail.

xskier77Route Climbed: Silver Creek Date Climbed: June 30, 2002  Sucess!

Ran over to Sunshine after summiting Redcloud. A fast and easy ridge to reach the summit of Sunshine. By running most of the ridge it only took me 45 minutes to get from Redcloud to Sunshine. Very easy day bagging both peaks.

rfboltonRoute Climbed: Standard from Redcloud Date Climbed: July 2, 2002  Sucess!

We returned via the South Fork Silver Creek trail and were glad because we would have gotten much wetter had we returned over Redcloud.
