Rick KentRoute Climbed: Via the Whitney Trail Date Climbed: Aug 16, 2003  Sucess!

Solo'd up the class 3 part with the help of a marked up photo. Although I was a bit apprehensive at first, this short climb was a lot of fun. A few patches of snow left over from the thunderstorm the day before had me concerned but turned out not to be a problem. After getting back down to the trail I met a fellow named Basil who wanted to do it so I went up again with him. Even more fun the second time!

An awesome little climb that helped to break the monotony of the endless Whitney Trail. Didn't see a single person even attempt Muir that day, though there had to be 150 people on the trail. A must do for anyone who's going up Whitney, just because you are right there.

Summited at around 1 pm, after summiting Russell and Whitney earlier that day. In this way I accomplished my goal of climbing three 14ers on my 33rd birthday. Got back to the trailhead at around 4:30 pm. Total time ca. 16 hrs.

Had a real winter conditions and being prepared for the fresh snow, we were lucky to get to the Trail Crest by the broad coulour (crampons and ice axes). Then proceeded along the trail and at the duck headed up to the base of the summit pinnacle. Brought the rope, but never used as it was class 3+ scrambling. Saw some weired hikers doing Whitney that looked like gosts. The fresh snow prevented many groups from climbing the peaks in this area, but for us the snowshoes helped to get back to the TH w/o problems.

Slept on Whitney's summit and tagged this in the morn. Great little scramble. I thought there were a couple class 4 moves but maybe class 3+ is accurate.

Great day climb of the class 3+ summit block. Did the round trip of 11 hours of hike time. I replaced the summit cylinder with an ammo box and a new register book.

Great views from the summit! All in all, a great day!

Did this as a day hike. Went up via the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek (Mt Whitney's Mountaineers Route). Summited Whitney at 10:39am; stayed there for 25 minutes and then descended via the regular Whitney Trail to bag Mount Muir. I found the start of the west face route of Muir from the Whitney Trail by observing due west the three small lakes (I'm looking at these 3 lakes straight on in front of me) just to the right of the western-most Hitchcock Lake (elev: 3540 m). From the base of the actual climb (class 3) to the summit is ~ 80 feet. I signed the purple summit log notepad at 11:55am. Made it back to my truck at 3:50pm.

Soloed Mount Muir from the trail. Quick but pretty interesting class 3 climbing, especially with fresh snow on the ledges. There is a new register (little yellow booklet). The last entry was Oct 20, a week earlier. It's a worthwhile jolt from the trail if you're going to be there anyway. Not a very worthy goal in itself, since the climbing is so short (20 -30 minutes max if you don't know the way). Great views of Whitney, Hitchcock, etc...

You can find a full TR with photos on my webpage.

This was a fun diversion from the monotony of the Whitney trail. This was my first time on Muir. Heading to Whitney for my wife's first attempt at Whitney.

bearbnzRoute Climbed: West Chute from the Whitney Trail Date Climbed: July 4, 2002

My second time to the top of Mt. Muir, this time ScottyS and I were dayhiking/climbing Muir, Whitney, Russell, and Carillon in a day (see our trip report). Our round trip from Portal to Portal was just shy of 12 hours. We descended the climber's trail in the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek drainage. Our time from the Portal to the summit of Muir was 3:15.

7/2/08 - Stopped by Mt. Muir on my way up Whitney with my 3 boys. My 10-year-old had done Whitney last year, but we skipped Muir, so this year we brought the 8-year-old twins and took the time for the detour, which is well worth it.

This was the easiest and quickest transition from trail to class 3 to summit, it takes about 15 minutes. The two books in the register were completely full, so I left my small notebook journal after tearing out the pages I had written notes on.

5:15hr to the summit of Russell from the Portal, via the Rockwell variation, Mt. Carillon, and the East Ridge. Descended the South Face, ascended Whitney's North Face, summitting 2:15h later. Summited Muir 1h later, returned to the Portal in another 2:15h. Total time, 10:45h. Trip Report.

Dayhiked Muir, Whitney, Russell, and Carillon with bearbnz on a great day. The final section of Muir was actually pretty cool. I still think it should be called Subpeak Muir, Barry! ;-)

Round trip time: 12hrs

More pics, etc are available on my homepage here.

Did this hike a few days after a nice family hike above Lake Sabrina was cut short by the attack. Glad I got an early start on this one so I met the masses going up Whitney when I was on the way down.

A fun little side trip, great views of the trail and surrounding environs. Plus, we were alone, while the summit of this big flat topped mountain REALLY close to us was covered with ants.

Well worth the short effort. It was incredible to look down on all those nasty switchbacks. No wonder you feel them?

Fun little scramble. When I was there on August 4, 2001, the register was beyond full and desperately needed to be replaced.
