Michael GraupeBrewer - North Guard Dayhike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 26, 2008

Started at 2:30am from Roads End and made it to the summit of Brewer via Sphinx Col in a little more than 8 hours. I could not find the register and spent some time searching and also climbed the pinnacle which I believe is the true highpoint. Then climbed North Guard and returned to Roads End at 7:30pm making for a long 17 hour day.

Same trip as Squishy. The NW slopes were a little loose, but the views from the top can't be beat.

HyadventureEast Ridge/Sphinx Lakes loop, day hike, July 2004  Sucess!

Always meant to write a TR for this hike but never got around to it; here's the summary version;
Left roads end at 4
East Lake by 8 - broke/dislocated a finger while getting water
Summit around 2 – kinda slow because of pain, surprised to meet a nice couple on summit, blew off plans to do North Guard and headed out via Sphinx Lakes
Picked up the Sphinx Creek Trail around 9, just after dark. Back to trailhead after midnight, but my ride (wife) had left two hours earlier. Hiked six more miles down the road back to camp at Cedar Grove. Ended up being a 32+ mile day hike

Date Climbed: Jul 11, 2007

Not that I think it too likely, but if you are approaching Brewer from the Roaring River area don't try to take the Brewer Creek drainage up from where it meets RR. It was a big pain due to steep loose dirt and rocks.
The summit on the other hand was fantastic. The climbing was okay but the view was great.

As a backpacking trip starting at Road's End. Wonderful views from the summit. The mosquitos were terrible until I got to above 12,000 feet. I tried both the right and the left sides of Sphinx Creek on the way to and back from the lowest lake and I got stuck in the bushes both times - just my luck.

Date Climbed: Oct 4, 2006

Acsended via Brewer col from East Lake. I had originally intended to first climb South Guard, but navigating the ridge with a fresh 6" of snow didn't look like too much fun. Instead I came back to Brewer col and ascended the S ridge of Brewer and descended to E ridge back to East Lake. Excellent views.

KerstinFailed attempt

It was July of 1995. We hiked in over Kearsarge Pass to Vidette Meadows. The mosquitos were far worse than anything I later experienced in the Alaskan interior during my honeymoon. It was a struggle to breathe! The next day we hiked to East Lake. The crossing of Bubbs Creek was quite dangerous--water to crotch level. I set out the following day by myself up the East Ridge. I took Secor's description a bit too literally and followed Ouzel Creek for way too long. The route I took was class three in many places, which was fine but it slowed me down. After the heavy winter, there was still too much snow to follow the correct route. I made it up to the last steep section before the summit ridge and had to turn around. If I hadn't turned around my partner would have started trying to find me in the dark. It was so frustrating! A bear tried to break into our tent at Kearsarge Lakes on the way out.

It was a very stressful trip which my partner didn't really want to be on.

I really want to go back to this area though!

A long time ago...climbed with Mark Danner. Must have been a great view (I just don't remember - I'll have to dust-off the slides....)

Matthew HollimanRoute Climbed: NW Slope (ascent) / East Ridge (descent) Date Climbed: Aug 14, 2004  Sucess!

North Guard/Brewer dayhike out of Cedar Grove. Spent thirty minutes perched amongst the boulders on the NW slopes while it thundered around me; with an apparent break in the weather, I headed up to the summit to then see lightning striking South Guard. Needless to say, I didn't stop to sign the register or take many photos, but instead scurried down the East Ridge to Ouzel Creek as fast as I could...
