COTrekker02Route Climbed: Emory Peak Trail Date Climbed: February, 1995  Sucess!

My dad and I climbed Emory as part of a four day trip to Big Bend. My dad and I ate lunch up near the summit and it is a great memory that I have. While I liked the hike up Emory, I liked the Santa Elena Canyon and Window trails better. Down in the Chisos Basin, we encountered wild javelinas, which was pretty cool. It is a great park with the Chisos and the desert nearby.

Nothing exceptional to report, but I did start early enough to have the peak and most of the return to myself even though it was Easter Sunday.

strawdRoute Climbed: Laguna Meadow to Colima and Boot Canyon Trails Date Climbed: May 28, 2000  Sucess!

We set out from the Basin trail head at 8:00, hiking up the Laguna Meadow Trail. About half way to the first saddle we encountered a mother black bear and her two cubs. We watched them for about 20 min. before moving on. We basically circled the peak before the final scramble to the top, following the Colima and Boot Canyon Trails to the Emory Peak Trail. The view is spectacular and it was a clear day with decent visability. We ate lunch and took pictures before hiking down the Pinnacles Trail. The kids rushed ahead to report the bear sighting to the Ranger Station while my wife and I ambled into the Basin area at 4:30 PM. We were hot, sore, dusty and hungry but it was well worth it.

The second mountain I ever climbed. Took a road trip from Dallas with high school friends before we all went to college. Left a bottle of champagne under the rocks on the summit. Wonder if it is still there...

dunking_deutschmanRoute Climbed: South Rim Loop Date Climbed: May 2002  Sucess!

cool side trip off the loop to make for an exciting, exhausting 17 mile tour of the Chisos Mountains. Or this makes a good, short destination hike in itelf. There is a little bit of slightly exposed class 2+ scrambling at the very very end, but you must do it to get any kind of view. The summit is the highest point in Big Bend. I've been up here a couple of times and there always seems to be about a million ladybugs. This whole area is one of the coolest hikes in Texas!

a walk up all the way to top with a bit of climbing/scrambling over last 50 feet or so, good views, warm, even this time of year

Y2K didn't stop us from the top! It was a great place to ride out the unrealized collapse of Western society. Beautiful day.

Nice hike. Too bad there was a lot of flies at the top that drove you off the top quickly. Nice day. Lot of people.

Sweet hike, with a tiny bit of exposed scrambling. Too bad there was nothing to see but antennas because of the fog and the rain:(

A great hike followed by a fun summit scramble. The only downer.......fog and overcast prevented a view. Otherwise....a great day!

This is a nice dayhike if you are in the area and the views from the top are fantastic. On one trip the clouds were passing through us on the summit before rushing down over the edge into the Chisos Basin.

rquire a scramble. Well worth the time, the views were
