Date Climbed: Sep 6, 2009

We dayhiked it from camp at Big McGee Lake. We followed a use trail from the McGee Pass to the summit - it was all hiking except for the steep, loose band of gray rock below the top. Beautiful hike in to Big McGee Lake and great views from the summit.

Pictures and trip report from our Red Slate Mountain climb.

Camped near Convict Creek with Dave and his wife, Rhoda. On previous trips, he'd already climbed Red Slate and I'd already climbed Baldwin, so we exchanged beta and 'traded peaks'. I arose much earlier and made it to the top of 'my' mountain first and was able to spot him climbing Baldwin through my telephoto lens. Rhoda, a botanist (not a climber), enjoyed a day among the High Sierra wildflowers. A perfect day for all!

We dubbed it Red Plate Mountain with the sounds walking up. Awesome views from here. One of my favorites so far.

We were a group of 8 skiers, some of us climbed the couloir and skied it. Nice and windy day. I got to the summit directly climbing the rock part.

Climbed with our Scout Troop and a three day outing. Camped out on the West side of Lake Dorothy in a campsite near the creek. Lots of snow from camp up to McGee Pass covering over 50% of the trail. Clear from the pass to the summit. Very nice view.

Climbed this long-ass couloir with Brad Mastros. Oh yeah, previous day: hot approach, mosquitoes at camp and a bee stung on my bud!

Climbed it as an overnighter but it still felt long. We had mostly snow in the coulior
with only a few sections of ice/neve. Outstanding views from the summit.

Climbed this many years ago from Big McGee Lake. Good climb from the pass, lots of loose rock - felt sort of like one step up and half a step slide back down - at one time felt the the side of the mountain was sliding down with me. Amazing views from the summit.

With James Barnett and Gary Snider. Encountered a little rock fall about half way up, but other than that it was an excellent climb.

Thirteen hour and fifteen minute round trip to the top via McGee Pass from the U.S. 395 accessed trailhead. Beautiful day, with hardly a cloud! Mosquitoes were pretty slim, although they started to come back on our way down. Some aspen leaves turning, many with leaf rot.
