"Mountain" Mike Barry and Patrick G. Tracy snowshoed into the cirque and made camp on March 17, 1988. The next morning we climbed up and out of the cirque and up to the summit of Icy peak.
It had been a good winter for snow, with a couple weeks of clear cold weather prior to the ascent. The snow conditions were excellent; very stable, in the normally avalanche heavy cirque.
There have been numerous winter ski ascents of Icy from Ruth mountain. But had anyone winter climbed Icy from the cirque itself prior to 1988?
If this was not the first winter ascent from that route, it was at least one of a very few. It is not a difficult route, but it is a dangerous one under typical winter conditions. |
