rbuzbyIcy Peak Winter climb from Nooksack Cirque  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 18, 1988

"Mountain" Mike Barry and Patrick G. Tracy snowshoed into the cirque and made camp on March 17, 1988. The next morning we climbed up and out of the cirque and up to the summit of Icy peak.

It had been a good winter for snow, with a couple weeks of clear cold weather prior to the ascent. The snow conditions were excellent; very stable, in the normally avalanche heavy cirque.
There have been numerous winter ski ascents of Icy from Ruth mountain. But had anyone winter climbed Icy from the cirque itself prior to 1988?
If this was not the first winter ascent from that route, it was at least one of a very few. It is not a difficult route, but it is a dangerous one under typical winter conditions.

Date Climbed: Oct 2, 2004

Hike up to the headwaters of the Nooksack river, jumping across water as needed thru a deep canyon to the base of Shuksan. Then go straight up obvious route and last bit traverse to a rocky finish to summit. Didn't use the rope. This is the route to go for this fun mountain. Go late in fall for least amount of water. Very long day.

2 days car-to-car was strenuous - would prefer 3 days. The last 60 feet is rocky gulley thing - my pals scampered up it but I was quite uncomfortable so they dragged me up on belay.

Camp on shoulder of Ruth is spectaculicious.
