| pretty "scrambly" for a Sawatch Peak- some steep snow just below the ridge forced me into a short section of class 3 scrambling. Continued on over to Garfield. | ||

| After Grizzly, proceeded on to Garfield. Attempted to continue along the ridge to Red Mtn and UN 13447, but was blocked by jagged towers along the ridge line. Couldn't figure a way around them that didn't involve sidehilling on extremely steep, extremely loose scree. Gave up and went home. | ||

| finally got out after our cascade expedition for a climb up the grizzly couloir! jamie, mike, steve and i got an early morning(4am) start to put us ahead of the surprising number(10-15) of people on this route today. 40-45 degree couloirs just aren't that exciting anymore. jamie | ||

| Climbed the North (aka Grizzly) Couloir with shanahan96, jamie nellis and stevets689. We then traversed over to Garfield and down the SW side of Garfield. Lots of people on this route today, but we were fortunate to be above them all with an early start. | ||

| What he said. Someone needs to come up with more unique names for peaks. I signed the wrong climbers log. Way to many Grizzlys in CO! :-) | ||

| Climbed this with Gurlyclimber under questionable weather. It never really snowed though despite threatening all day. Will return for Garfield soon. Had a tree snap and fall on the road! We had to cut it to get it! Actually, a fun day! | ||

| Nice Outing. The view of the Elk's is grand from here. Saw only one other person on a Saturday with perfect weather. The solitude was refreshing, took a cat nap near the summit. | ||

| Climbed and skied (snowboarded this time) the Grizzly Chute with Britette an Scott McCurdy. A nice wide shot of sweetness. the Grizzlies shoulder looked nice for skiing too. | ||

| Britette | Grizzly Chute ![]() Date Climbed: Jun 10, 2007 | |
| From the Portal campground (Lincoln Creek Road) climbed the north couloir otherwise known as the Grizzly chute. Skied back down the chute to 11,400 feet for 2,600 feet of skiing. Not bad for June! Chute was hard snow at top, steep with cornice, transitioning to corn by the middle and slush the remainder. | ||

| Great day, awesome mountain, by far my best Sawatch experience. We gained the ridge way to soon which made for some great scrambling. We had the mountain all to ourselves, as we didn't see any people once we got past the La Plata TH. | ||

| Despite being very overcast and whiteout from low lying clouds, I still had a wonderful outing. Even though there were about 50 cars at the La Plata TH, I didn't see anyone else on the mountain. | ||

| Great climb, and an awesome peak. We climbed in full on winter conditions, some white out conditions. Use skis if possible, to the base. Climb up and then back down and ski out. Found this to be a pretty accessable way to do the Grizz. | ||

| This remote peak simply towers over nearly everything around it. I saw a family of 20 or so mountain goats up here as well. The falls in upper McNasser Gulch are stunning. | ||

| GORGIOUS ! See my trip report on this same page. This loop is really worth it. Not a soul on the mountain except the 5 of us. The trail up to Grizzly lake is wonderful, the snow climb of the north couloir is really something, and and and.... just read the trip report. And have fun going there ! | ||

| I did this hike with my friend Josh. It was a steller day, beautiful weather, blooming flowers and great views. As Aaron noted in his summit log, I too am surprised that this one is not a more popular hike. Roach's book says that it's a class 2+ hike but it's more like a class 2. You can make it a class 2+ or class 3 if you wish but if you stick to the path of least resistance its no mora than a great hike in the Sawatch. McNasser Gulch is a special place. | ||
