| Drove most of the way with Jen and Dosha for this one while staying at Malheur Field Station to escape the Fourth of July madness back in the big city. Great views from the ridgetop viewpoints. It was nice to see some familiar SP names in the log at the top. We were treated to the sight of three coyote pups on the return towards Frenchglen | ||

| My dad and uncle were headed down to Fields where they grew up for a daytrip, so I tagged along and managed to talk them into swinging up on the ridgeline so I could finally get a load of the view from the top of the Steens. It was really smoky out from all the range fires going on (big hollow road into Fields was a blackended wasteland). Despite the smoke, the viewpoints were really cool, I am definitely coming back here on my own terms to do some hiking and climbing. My dad did the half mile walk up to the summit with me, always like to have him join me for these sorts of adventures. | ||

| Ran it as a Steens Mtn camper... amazing view of the Alvord, and the gorges are spectacular. Definitely a lung burner, but worth every wheeze! | ||

| Drove most of the way then hiked to the summit. Went on a four day backpacking adventure through one of the cool steens mtn gorges. Alvord desert is a good place to drive your car at unreasonable speeds. | ||

| Nice drive with good gravel road. Lots of sun, and plenty of people up there. Posted speed on the north branch of the Loop is 35 mph. Easily attainable with the good road, not too badly washboarded. | ||

| Steens moutain looks like a giant ramp with the verticle side to the east. Continuing eastward is the Alvord desert which is a a hard pan playa and a neat place to explore. It is also Oregon's only true desert, recieving less than 7 inches of preip. per year. Steens is a nice place to hike around, there are some refreshing aspen groves and some areas that even sport mountain mahogony. Take plenty of water!!! The top affords a view down into Keiger george which is the textbook example of a glacier carved george. Accross the george is a double cirque which looks really out-of-place in the semi-arid grassslands. I have met some of the local landowners and they are usually OK for hikers to explore their land if you ask permission. | ||

| rfbolton and I drove down from Washington and stayed at Page Springs campground near Frenchglen on Friday night. We were interested in doing Steen's as it represents the highpoint of Harney County. We did the loop and wouldn't recommend the southern route. Frenchglen has a neat little hotel that serves a good breakfast. We saw lots of bow hunters out and about. | ||

| rpc | Route Climbed: Big Indian Gorge Date Climbed: June 29-30, 2002 ![]() | |
| Beautiful hike to the summit!!! My wife and I did this as on overnighter from South Steens Campground. It's a substantial approach distance (~12 TH to summit) via the SPECTACULAR Big Indian Gorge. Descended via the road (due to time constraint) nice views up at the top, but some nasty dust from tourists passing by in their rattling cars. | ||
