squishyRoute Climbed: north side  Sucess!

The tarantula, North America's largest spider, spends most of its life in and around its underground burrow. However, when a male tarantula reaches maturity at about seven years of age, he leaves the safety of his subterranean home to risk life and limb in search of females of the species. These love struck males are the autumnal wanderers we see on Mt Diablo. Best time to go is sept/oct.

aahzFun off season mountain  Sucess!

Diablo has a lot to offer for those near the Bay Area. The north side of the park has much less traffic. I recommend going during Tarantula season.

Nice, somewhat steep climb to Eagle Peak then back down, then back up to reach Diablo. Made it to the summit just before the fog did. Beautiful day! Met Will & descended with him. Good times in Cali.

This was a nice, chilly hike that took 4:45 from car to car. After getting to the top, I slowly jogged down with an adventure racer that I had met at the top. He is planning on attempting a speed record for a one-way traversal of the John Muir Trail this summer.

Great day for a climb. Got a very un-alpine start at 12:30pm. Did the mile and half climb in 30 minutes and found a parking lot on top with the summit inside a building. Great views on all sides but a little hazy and foggy.

Michael PerryJuniper Trail, Rock City with great views  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 5, 2006

Hiked the Juniper Trail from Diablo Vally Overlook to the summit and back, hiked over to Devil's Elbow, and then drove to Rock City later in the day. The view from the summit looking west was excellent. Could see Sutro Tower, Downtown SF, the Golden Gate, and Tamalpais. View east was limited due to valley fog.

Spectacular views after this week's Bay Area rains - Four Summits is a wonderful hike, no crowds on trail.. but pretty crowded at the summit with the "drive-up" folks on the top of Diablo.

I've been making this my first spring hike for the last number of years. Always nice to shock the legs into action after a quiet winter.

Went with climbing partners S. Thompson and GMC Envoy. Started from Walnut Creek a little bit after 11:00AM. Reached the summit at about 12:30. Was a little disapointed when the ranger told me there was no summit register in which I could chronicle my efforts.

I like this trailhead more than Mitchell Canyon, because you start gaining elevation a lot sooner, and the scenery is more interesting. Did the Falls Loop on the way up.

Date Climbed: Jan 14, 2006

the plan was to do the 4 summits hike, but we had a lazy morning and didn't get to Mitchell Canyon until 11 or so. We got Eagle done and the Mt Diablo summit, but the ranger manning the snackbar advised us that at 5PM they would either close the gates and lock our car in at Mitchell Canyon or give us a ticket, so we hustled back down (with plenty of time to spare) leaving East peak and Mt Olympia for another trip.

Date Climbed: Jul 7, 2006

Route Climbed: From Mitchell Canyon. The round trip is a strenuous 23.4 mile hike (11.7 mile one way). Felt quite a bit, especially in the sun, when you are the ONLY ONE on the trail.

This is not a very good training hike as it is mostly flat and hot for the first few miles; it took us 2:45 to get to the top though so it wasn't a huge time commitment.

Nice, easy hike. On the top the museum and a great view as a reward. Try to go on days with great visibility!
