oxalisRoute Climbed: Elk Creek Camp to Wilson River to Kings Mtn. to Elk Mtn. to Elk Creek Campground  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 11, 2008
A friend and I hiked from the Elk Creek campground down the bland Wilson River trail, then up to Kings Mountain, across to Elk Mountain, and down the Elk Mountain trail to return. The weather was mild at 1000', but gusty and extremely wet at summit/ridge level. Visibility was around 100' at the higher points so there were no views to speak of, but the weather itself was nice scenery. Plenty of steep sections in either direction, and some fun little rock scrambles, too--I would think twice before trying the Kings-Elk traverse under too snowy of conditions.

This hike took just shy of six hours with the occasional sit-down included.

This has to be the steepest official trail in the state. Great fun and a good workout.

Date Climbed: May 18, 2008

Did this "in reverse" from Kings. Beautiful warm day, but still a fair amount of mature snow on the northern slopes. Didn't use the snowshoes we carried, but our boots got wet.

LeviUnexpected Snow...  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 4, 2008

Took the day off to try and get back into shape. Got to the trail head and we were dissapointed because the rain came in. Once at 1500 feet it went from rain to snow. The summit had knee deep snow and there were snow drifts waist deep. Of course, we left the snow shoes in the car. Great hike took 5 hours round trip.
APRIL 12, 2008
Once Dad got off work we jumped in the car and headed straight for the trailhead. At about 2000' we branched off the trail and went up through the brush. Got to the summit at 7 and back to the car at 8. Almost no snow left, what a difference a week can make.

Went with(then)8 year old son, sunny day. Some snow near top,1-2 inches. Also did the Elk-Kings traverse solo in 1988. Add another ascent December 2006, about 7" of snow at the summit.

Beautiful day and great views all the way up but what a work out! I can't emphasize enough the importance of adequate water. I misjudged, ran out, and became badly dehydrated 2/3 of the way back down.

Steep, class 2 trail. Dusty and hot, but worth the effort. Saw five other hikers this day.

Date Climbed: Apr 5, 2003

Climbed this the same day as I went up King's Mountain. It is really nice to do the two peaks together. Wish I had done more in that area, but regardless, I enjoyed the time I spent in that region.

rangermikeElk Mtn. Trail- Elk creek trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 29, 2006

Great hike up into the clouds! After the summit, we came down the back side to follow the elk creek trail back to the parking lot. Hard going- surprised to see upwards of 4' of snow! Eventually lost the trail, and bushwacked down into the elk creek drainage. Crazy terrain, but did see a bulldozer wrecked in the creek and a huge cross/ memorial on the hillside above the creek. It would be cool to find out more about those.....

SoupRoute Climbed: Elk to Kings Traverse Date Climbed: August 24, 2005  Sucess!

I had breakfast with a buddy at Alice's Restaurant around milepost 8 (good eats) on Highway 6. He was on his way into the valley, so he shuttled me up to the Elk Trailhead to hike solo while my truck was waiting at Kings. The shuttle cut out the 3.5 mile get-back via East Wilson River Trail and I felt a bit like a cheater, but it was nice!

The trail was clear enough to follow and the signs at major junctions were cool. I got a kick out of the "Caution" sign posted along the trail as it drops of the backside of Elks, duh. There are old blue dots and blazes on the birch in sporadic places, offering a little route affirmation.

It was a blue sky day day offering hazy Eastern views to Hood and similar western views to Cape Lookout and Cape Meares. I couldn't make out the Pacific, but I hear you can see that too.

10/22/05

Another nice time with two buddies. Low fog in the valleys with blue sky overhead, the weather was kind. The trail was leaf covered. This was the first time I ever spit water out of my nose on the summit of any mountain from laughing so hard, good friends are good to have.

fear n loathingRoute Climbed: Elk-Kings back via Wilson River trail Date Climbed: Feb. 12th, 2005  Sucess!

We thought we saw a mobile meth lab parked across from us at the trailhead starting out. Hike was cloudy, rainy, foggy, cold, etc. Getting up Elk is fun. Never allows you to develop a steady pace. Your heart rate is always going up & down making for good training. The U between is great. Pretty easy until you get closer to Kings & wrap along the backside of the ridge. If there's snow back there (like this time) you'll have a fun time crawling up it & sliding down it while reaching for anything to hold onto. Try not to slide off the edge in the snow, it's a long way down & taxpayers hate that stuff. Kings & down, no problem. Then just the long, never ending hike back to Elk trailhead after that. But you'll get an average workout in that portion. Saw no sasquatch this time. Suspected mobile meth lab was still there when we got back, but looked abandoned by it's 2 former operators. Thank God for CHL's & hi-cap mags.

fear n loathingRoute Climbed: Elk-King 12 mile loop Date Climbed: January 30, 2005  Sucess!

Great day. Started at Elk, which was fun to say the least then wandered around the U to Kings. The U is the best part of the trip. Well worth it. Did not see any Sasquatch, but did see a Liger in a tree. I fought it off with my bow staff though. If you do the loop start at Elk and don't count on the Wilson river trail back to be as flat as it starts out. Also you'll find some Blair Witch-like rock piles on the U part.

lostmanRoute Climbed: Elk/Kings Combo Date Climbed: March 2003  Sucess!

An exciting Coast Range hike. These mountains feel surprisingly big and the trails are plenty steep. Some of the prettiest spots were on the trail connecting the two mountains at their bases. I like the views back to Kings Mountain from the top of Elk.
