| One of my favorite day trips in the Bavarian Fore Alps. I like to approach from Garmisch because stopping at the Esterberg Alm is a treat, great food and it is nice to get a cold coffee after a long day. Hiking from St. Anton Pfarrkirche in Partenkirchen you follow the road to the Esterberg Alm. This part is straightforward. From there the trail across the higher alms can be confusing. Stay low on the mountain until you can see the trail continuing up above a long chute. The trail from the saddle below the Bischof and the Krottenkopf is very fun. Cross the snow field and begin ascending the flank of the Krottenkopf until you get to the somewhat steep headwall beneath the summer supply lift. Ascend to the Col where the Hut is located. I climbed this mountain three times in Jan/Feb and used the lee of the hut to stash my pack and snowshoes for my ascent. Crampons are not necessary but in the strong winds they were appreciated, as were an ice axe. The descent is the same route but take care in avalanche conditions above three when descending the headwall beneath the cable. I have seen several small slabs set off here. A long day trip but well worth it. There are also many good bivy spots along the trail between Esterberg Alm and the Krottenkopf. Also, a hike out to Esterberg Alm and then up the Wank makes for a nice day and gives a good place to stay the night. |
