Bob BurdSomewhat lame summit  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 30, 2009

The trail from Devils Peak to the summit is like being a rat in a maze with chaparral well over one's head. And the summit is disappointing with weak views. Oh well, I guess they can't all be spectacular... Trip Report

Hike in since the burn of 08, and the trail was opened in May. a goodly amount of poison oak on the first hour of the hike. The trail is improved along the burn line at the base of Devils Peak.

A hot dayhike from Bottcher's Gap. 95 F at the trailhead, 85 F on the summit. Flies and ticks weren't too bad. Average views. Combined with Devil's Peak.

Hiked this as a day hike in combination (obviously) with Devil's Peak. A great clear day, warm and pleasant. Perfect time of year for the hike.

A scattered inch or two of snow above Devil's Peak, which was melting fast in the warm afternoon sun. Not difficult to find the route to the top, although the views are much better from Devil's Peak. A decent hike.

We only climbed Devil's Peak due to time restraints, but it was challendging hiking on 3 inches of snow up the south face of Devil's peak.

Great day hike with many options to push on to further summits. We made a beautiful trail run of it and cooled down with a cold one back at Botcher's Gap. The drive up can be precarious, use caution and watch your speed with on-coming traffic.

A nice hike from Bottchers gap. Did the hike in the morning to avoid possible high temps. Met up with 2 men at the peak whom were very helpful at pointing out many peaks and locations. A great hike, but not much of a veiw unless you get up on the large rock at the peak. I think that rock needs a special name.

Good hike. Tough from the other end of Skinners Ridge up to Devils Peak. Great views from there south into the Ventana Wilderness except it was a little hazy this day. The trail was not as overgrown as others I have hiked in the Ventana Wilderness. The most overgrown was the last 1/4 mile or so to the summit. A lot of Lupine and other wild flowers out but quite a bit of flies as well.

Palo Colorado Road..........Look out for the canyon people!

Say hello to Larry, he lives in the 1969 Airstream Bambi

at the park. Oh, pay your five bucks or he will give you a ticket.

The hike up is a good workout, my time was 2:14 to summit. I am over 50.

The summit is still overgrown.

Take plenty of H2O, those who don't suffer.

Great View!

After plowing through snow on my last two outings, Carmel was a nice change of pace (plowing through chaparral instead). Weather was mild for mid November.

Pics are here: http://www.fedak.net/albums/MtCarmel.html

p.s. Be sure to check out mpbro's posting. This junction is easy to miss.

MishaRoute Climbed: Skinner Ridge Trail Date Climbed: December 29, 2002  Sucess!

Hiked this round top with my girlfriend a couple of hours ago. It was fun and rather tough near the summit where we had to break through solid and very wet/cold bushes! There was at least a 1/2 foot of snow covering the trail starting at the Devil's Peak summit. Due to the lack of footprints on the snow, we believe that we were the only ones hiking it recently... except for the unknown creature who summited it shortly before us (see my pics). Weather was changing every 30 minutes, ranging from rain to sun to snow and back to rain.... Trail is wonderful and we loved our hike. We will certainly be back for a longer trip to Ventana Double Cone!

Lower section of the hike was nice, if unremarkable. Got some interesting views around the Skinner Ridge overlook, but the clouds obscured things a bit. The final push through the brush to the Mount Carmel summit was tough, if you are taller than a deer.

butterflywings73Route Climbed: Botter's Gap Date Climbed: 8/21/01  Sucess!

The trails was quite overgrown and now well marked at all. We did make the summit, however we ended up taking a wrong turn along the way (at the point that the campgrounds intersect).

We contemplated turning around once we reached Devil's Peak (which was the most difficult portion of the climb). But we decided to continue on, and I'm glad we did. The climb to the summit wasn't that much more father, and a lot less difficult.

The summit is marked only by a pile of rocks. You must climb up these to get any view due to the overgrown bushes all around.

Watch out for the boyscouts at the base, and the large buses on the seemingly one lane, but paved, road that takes you to Botter's Gap.

I was feeling really lazy Saturday morning and didn't want to take my 2WD car up to Tahoe for the weekend, so I looked for a short nearby hike. I was thinking of doing Mount Tam from Muir Woods, but I couldn't find my National Parks Pass so I went to Big Sur instead. I headed up in running shorts, sneakers, and a long sleeve t-shirt. There were some minor patches of snow at 2700' becoming more pronounced at 2900'. About 90+% the 0.8 mile Mount Carmel Trail was covered with up to 4 inches fresh snow and my fingers were freezing as I took photos on the summit. I drank about 10 oz. of water but I was hungry and didn't have any food so I made and ate 3 snowballs. On the way down at about 2710' I ran into a snowman that I believe a couple made. On my hike in, I saw 1 couple (with dog) and 1 guy (also with dog) hiking out of Pat Springs so I assume that it was the couple that made him for Easter :-) Neither group did the Mount Carmel Trail after the snow, so that part was a very pristine hike / experience.

My partner wasn't up for the hot weather and swarming flies, so we turned back at Skinner Ridge.
