| Our tour group left the monastery around 2am and reached the summit around 4am. This puts everyone on the summit with a few hours to kill before sunrise and probably doesn't hurt the coffee and tea sales. It gave me a chance to descend the back of the mountain and bag the nearby Gebel Katharina. Then I was able to return to the monastery by 8:15am and rejoin the group before the opening at 9am. | ||

| Very amusing experience, walking with so many people to the summit, avoiding crashing into camels that came up and down. The sunrise was really beautiful, unbelievable that it happens every day..... | ||

| My friend and I weren't crazy about hiking up and spending several hours on the summit for the sun to rise, so we hung up with the policeman stationed in his little office at the base for several hours. Much warmer down there. Even then, we stilled reached the top about an hour before sunrise. A wonderful outing, loaded with historical significance, but almost comical at the same time with all the people crowded and freezing at the summit. | ||

| Up the long route from the monastery with a friendly young Bedouin, rested about an hour on an empty noon top, down with my Bedouin guide through scenic Wadi el Arbein. One great full day among 4, see TR here. | ||

| Back in 1999, took a week long vacation in sharm el sheikh and took a trip to Mt. Sinai. Left the hotel in the just after dinner. Arrived in the wee hours of the morning (even if there were A LOT of people), and went up the regular route (no cammels, but i did enjoy some of the tea stands). Reached the summit before sunrise, waited 30 min and headed down to see the monastery and head back to the beach. I have a lot of good memories about that place and it was really nice to go up the mountain at night with cammels and such. | ||

| In between snorkeling and doing other things on vacation in the Sinai, we decided to head into the mountains for a day. We rode camels from the Katherina Monastery until the steep part and then hiked the rest of the way to the little building at the summit. It was pretty cold and windy on top, with lots of snow visible on Gebel Katharina. I went with my family and my friend Matt's family. | ||

| This was a truly unique experience! Climbed during the day to avoid a busload of Russians. My party of three was the only ascending the mountain. Many Bedouins trying to sell me rocks, Coca-Cola and things. I also managed to get a cell signal on top - I confess, I checked - The air was crystal clear. Instead of seeing the sunrise, I witnessed the sunset. Took a minibus from Cairo. | ||

| Easy couple of hours walk up there and decent views to Sinai High Mountain Region. For those who want solitude and silence, this is not the peak to go. You can't avoid merchants even up there. I took the descent via the 4000 Steps of Repentance which was fairly comfortable. | ||

| Climbed during the night and found refuge in some of the huts on the summit. Woke at 4am to watch the sunrise, which was very, very beautiful. More of a spiritual experience than a mountaneering one, but then that's what it is supposed to be. | ||

| The border between Egypt and Israel was discussed and readjusted nearly every day. We climbed the peak from monastery St. Katherine. We had a marvellous and lonesome sunset. So many beautiful and nameless mountains towards the east. A marvellous view! On summit, the church was locked, but the mosque was open. Thus, we (the christians or former christians) had a quiet and excellent night within the mosque. In the very early morning several tour groupes arrived. One of their egyptian tour leaders politely advised us to leave the mosque before someone might arrive, who might take religion more serious than he... Off course, we rushed to follow this diplomatic advice. Inavoidably, at sunrise american (and other) tour groups would sing christian songs loudly. The mountains did not seem to care... For the way down, we chose some steps descending towards the north. After that, a long walk along desert tracks was necessary. We followed some bedouins and their camels. In the middle of nowhere there was a military check post. One of the kind, we really had gone sick of. Reluctantly, we showed our passports. They wanted to send us back. We insisted on continuing, telling them, that our base was St. Katherine. At first they did not believe, but then they made sure, there are no witnesses, and hastily waved us across. Have we really been in Israel? I will never know. This should be the mountain of peace ... | ||
