Date Climbed: Sep 6, 2009

hgrapid, same bs happened to me...hiked back down a little to get around the "guard" on Lassen, ended up on Bumpus Hell and Brokeoff anyways. Nicer hike than Lassen, with good views from the top, especially of Shasta.

Date Climbed: Sep 26, 2009

Made it all the way to the park and it turns out the trail to Lassen Peak itself was closed due to a freak rock slide killed a young child. So, we hiked Brokeoff Mountain instead. We also hiked the Bumpass Hell trail to the hot springs.

rhyangSouth slope snowshoe  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 8, 2009

Snowshoed up to 8100' and snow-camped the night before. Ten feet of snow at the SW entrance visitor center.

The morning dawned clear and I headed up. Brought an ice axe, but it stayed strapped to my pack - snowshoes and poles were sufficient, though the last couple hundred feet were windblown and rime ice showed through in places.

Saw ski tracks on the slope, but only bootprints near the summit. Beautiful day.

Sadly, the deli in Mineral is no more - the building is for sale :(

Route climbed: South slope

Decent weather window with low avy hazard, so I went for it. Drove up from the bay area and started in the afternoon - snowshoed up to 8000' and camped. High temps in the high 20's, overcast with occasional light snow. Overnight temps in the teens. About 2-3' of snow on the ground, with an ice layer just below the first few inches (had to use my ice axe to dig holes for tent anchors - my aluminum shovel blade would not penetrate).

Next morning dawned clear and cold. Got a liesurely start around 7:30am on snowshoes. At around 8600' noted that the south slope was a dusting of windblown snow over a layer of rime ice. Switched to crampons and axe. On top before 9. Excellent views of Lassen Peak, Shasta, Lake Almanor, etc. Very light wind, but cold.

Beautiful day and short descent back to car before noon in time for a sandwich at the deli in Mineral :)

Combined with Lassen summiting these two in a day makes for a respectable little bit of hiking. Fewer people on this peak, and the views were better (at least this hazy day). This peak made the 350 mile drive worth the investment.

When the young, cute, ranger smiled at our (single) friend and asked us what we had climbed, I replied: Brokeback mountain.

Date Climbed: Aug 28, 2008

Great hike! Having done Lassen Peak four times previously, this hike is every bit as spectacular, and infinitely more enjoyable. As opposed to interminable switchbacks, this trail has forest, meadows, trees, and excellent trail the whole way. The first people I met on the trail, was on my way off the summit!

With my son. A fun hike. Nice views of Lassen and the Brokeoff summit for lots of the trail. Very windy on top, gusts to 40 mph, but not cold at all. Up in 1:45, down in 1:05. Recommended.

DigglerTrail... with snow!  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 13, 2007

Still appreciable snow from the recent storms (virtually melted out at TH to a few ft deep in places!) made for wet conditions, but beautiful scenery. Really nice forests along the way, & views of Lassen were unbeatable. Got a few glimpses of mighty Mt. Shasta through the clouds. Left TH @ 12.17, summited ~15.56 & hung out at summit for about an hour, returning to car @ 18.56 (parties behind me got back in dark- hopefully they had headlamps or warm clothes!!). Great day.

Celebrating my birthday weekend. Nothing like bagging a county highpoint with the wife. A very cool hike, prefer this peak over Lassen.

A nice hike to the summit. A lot more fun than Lassen Peak, more wildlife and a nice swim at Forest Lake on the way down, and nobody on the trail. Realized there is enough time to climb Lassen and Brokeoff in the same day.

I recommend Lassen in the morning before it gets crowded (i.e. 9am) and Tahama after lunch although bring lots of water the first couple miles in the forest were hot. Definitely appreciated the diversity of scenery and vegetation (vs Lassen).
