Date Climbed: Sep 3, 2007

We climbed out of bed slash the back of our car and climbed this thing and it kicked my ass. It wasn't that long of a hike, but it seemed to go straight up--it probably didn't, but I am new at all this. Anyway, it was gorgeous and I made it there and back with the loving encouragement/annoying prodding of my sweet climber of a boyfriend. So, that is that. Hope you are happy Weeds.

Several of them greeted us at the top. Big ones - little ones - hungry ones. One large fellow lept off a rock while we were trying to touch it - not to escape us, but to catch a grasshopper. He nailed it! Other than that it was a great day - beautiful weather - nice peak. Very shapely.

rayrayFun hike with rewarding views  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 18, 2007

Relatively easy hike; no other hikers. Started at Crest Trail (Trail 25, north trailhead) on USFS Road 108, then to Nogal Summit Trail (Trail 16). There are areas where the trail fades, but overall it's easy to follow. Don't wear shorts on this hike. Estimate 1,350 ft. net elevation gain over 1.75 miles, with about 500 ft. gain over the final 1/3 mile. Great summit views of the White Mountain Wilderness, Malpais lava flow, Capitan Mountains, White Sands National Monument, and Sierra Blanca. Finding the benchmark was a little bit of a challenge, but it's there.

Walkup. Used this one as a warm up for some of the

more challenging peaks in Southern New Mexico.

Excellent views, the trees are now green, and a lone bighorn sheep to boot. A wee bit windy though. Note: the summit trail is not marked. Descent: north slope (avoiding the trees), meeting up with Trail 54.

Nice winter hike. Very windy on top but otherwise the temps weren't too bad. Views from the summit were awesome.

Don't wear shorts as the scub oak will eat you alive.

Don't descend the western slope as this area is bear country.
