| May '02 was our last training weekend before a group of us were planning to attempt Mount Rainier. The goal was to get out hiking in the local mountains with full packs on. It turned out to be a stellar day!!!! Weather was great. Snow conditions were great. Only a small section on route to First Peak where we had to kick steps, the rest was just upward hiking. We stopped for lunch at First Peak on the only exposed rock we saw all day. The hike from First to Second Peak was quick and easy. There was a bit of a steep descent from Second Peak before heading to Third Peak, our final destination. On our way back, there was lots of bum sliding (weeeeee!) with just a little hike back up Second Peak where we had to kick steps, then pretty much sliding & hiking back to the parking lot. Lots of fun, nothing technical, good excercise. |
