Easy dayhike out of Mineral King. Lots of sand up to Sawtooth Pass. Weather turned while on the summit and cut the day short. Fun descent towards Upper Monarch though.

bighornmonkeyA lot of sand on the way up  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 19, 2009

From Mineral King trailhead, we backpacked to Monarch Lake, set up camp there, and went for Sawtooth peak in a little under 2 hours. Awesome views from the top. Mineral peak looked really good so we did it the next day.

cppilot89Great way to end a 3-day Mineral King backpack  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 5, 2009

This made for an amazing end to an amazing trip. The weather was absolutely perfect, although there seemed to be a fire to the south somewhere pushing a bunch of smoke northward into Lost Canyon. My highest peak to date!! Keep your eyes open for a trip report soon to come.

SeanReedySawtooth Pass on a warm, clear day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 8, 2007

I opted to stay in the shade of the newer trail to Sawtooth Pass on the way up as it was hot in the sun. I took the old trail back after summiting via Sawtooth Pass. Descending on the old trail is rough on tired legs and feet for someone who might enjoy jogging or walking quickly down the softer and more gradaual new trail. Great views with very little Central Valley haze.

wingdingUp Sawtooth Pass down to Monarch Lake  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 9, 2006

Took the Sawtooth Pass Trail almost to the pass and then headed out the ridge to the summit of Sawtooth - I even got on the summit block. On the way down the route to upper Monarch Lake looked okay so I headed down that way and picked up the trail again at lower Monarch Lake. A beautiful day - not too hot and not too cold. The skys were blue, but a bit hazy due to a fire in the distance.

catullusRoute Climbed: NW ridge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 3, 2006

Climbed up NW ridge, climbed down South ridge to Amphitheater Lake. Started at 3:30am with the hope that we'd climb both Sawtooth and Needham. At 9:30am we were the first in the summit register for the day. Decided to chill at Amphitheater Lake instead of climbing Needham. Even though it was labor day weekend, we didn't see any other parties until we were halfway back down (at Crystal Lake).

Evan and I peaked sawtooth on the 2nd to last day of our 7 day backpacking trip starting at Crescent meadow, going over the Kaweah gap, coming up lost canyon and ending out of Mineral King. Definately a highlight.

mrjdobbs Sawtooth at Sunrise  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 1, 2005

I climbed Sawtooth in the dark just to see the sunrise from the summit. It was truly amazing. First I watched the crescent moon rise...then the sun came up. It flashed from behind Needham and sent rays in every direction. This sunrise was probably the most emotional and awesome sights I have ever seen. The route wasn't too difficult except for the sand. My headlamp went out halfway up and I have to use a mini maglight the rest of the way.

Climbed Sawtooth during seven trip back to Lodgepole. Glacier Pass to Hands-and Knees Pass is preferable to get over to Five Lakes. Smoky views due to numerous fires.

SeanReedyDate Climbed: July 24, 2005  Sucess!

A quick hike up along the old trail to the Sawtooth Pass area, followed by a moderate scramble to the peak and a risky scramble/slide/climb staight down to Upper Monarch Lake to attempt to avoid the potential lightening of an incoming thunderstorm. Take care to try to follow the intended route and stay where the most footprints are so you avoid risking your life free climbing down the cliff bands like I did. The new trail to the Southwest of Lower Monarch Lake made a more gradual hike back down to Mineral King. The views were more than worth the effort!

LangenbacherRoute Climbed: from Mineral King via Sawtooth Pass Date Climbed: July 28, 1996  Sucess!

Trip with Debbie and Fritz (my wife and my brother). ~ 13.6 miles r.t. 4500 ft. elevation gain parked at Timber gap / Sawtooth pass trail head ~8am. 5 hours up (8am-1pm), 4 hours down. Fire a few miles north caused haze which gradually obscured the nice view of Cirque, Langley, Muir, Whitney, Russell, but Mt. Kaweah still visible all day. Deb tried to go east down to Columbine lake from sawtooth pass, but chickened out and waited ~2 hours at the pass for me and Fritz to bag the peak. The route from the pass to the peak was a nice scramble. The very summit block was too scary for us to stand on, so we just put our hands on top of it. Couldn't find a register. Fritz and I hope to go back to Sawtooth pass this summer and climb big Kaweah.
