Summitted Lone Peak on a perfect Saturday afternoon. The weather was 76?F at 5:30 am when we began via Jacob's Ladder, and I feared that it would be a hot one. However clouds kept us cool throughout the hike and at the summit, I was neither hot nor cold. It was a beautiful day. I double fisted a water bottle and gatorade to make sure that I had plenty of liquid. The Gatorade was a sweet reward at the summit, and I gave half my water to Davy Crockett, a.k.a. "self-pronounced ultra marathoner". So thanks Davy for not bringing enough for yourself to help me lighten my load. I also still had a half-bladder full of water in my camelbak upon completion, so clearly, if the weather cooperates, I won't need to double fist for bloody knuckles on the rock scrambling the next time.

What a great day for Lone Peak! We were so glad that we hit the trailhead around 530am, and while Jacob's Ladder is hideous, it definitely seems to be the fastest route. We made it up to the summit and back in just under 8 hours. The last 1/4 mile of rock scrambling to the top was my favorite part. We had the summit to ourselves for about half an hour. The views were amazing! It'll be a hike I'll do again, but next time I'd like to try to climb Lone Peak via Bells Canyon.

Had a great time. Jacob's ladder lived up to it's reputation and the summit ridge too. I love the adrenalin at the top! Will definitely do this again.

8/10/2009 Jacob's Ladder to Outlaw Cabin to Lone Peak
3/13/2009 A perfect day--there was no wind! Not even on Draper Ridge. I could have spent the entire day in short s and a t-shirt it was so pleasant up there. I climbed with Scott Wesemann by way of the Cherry Canyon trail, then connect with Draper Ridge, then through Cowboy Camp and the cirque. I was successful in summiting. This was making right the "unfinished business" from January when a group of us came oh-so-close to summiting Lone Peak in a blowing white-out.

Also climbed:

10/18/2008 with Joe Bullough & Robert Koch on a sunny day
8/9/2008 Orson Smith TH through cirque
4/26/2008 Grizz's 100th, with Grizz, Joe B, MOCKBA, Michael H., Brent W., Ammon Hatch
1/26/2008 First winter ascent with WMC
8/1/2007 Hematoma Quad with Grizz and J. Anderson

Quite a lovely hike up Jacobs Ladder approach. Took the hike pretty slow but made it to the summit at around 2:00pm. Going down through Little/Big Willow may have been a mistake (more bushwhacking than expected), but overall a splendid trip. Glad to finally make it -- this mountain has taunted me for many years. Went with Ammon Hatch

Difficult climb. Tougher than I expected. We did the Jacob's Ladder TH route and I was dying the first few miles. Hit a second wind at the cirque and took a nap on the summit. Got sunburned for the first time in over a year. Haven't done a ton of peaks but the view from Lone Peak is the best I've seen. I really liked the severe exposure on the summit and the view of the cottonwood canyons.

A buddy and I climbed from Jacob's Ladder. We started early, so it was real nice going up. Busy day on the mountain - a family group of about 10 people made it to the peak just after we did. The jacob's ladder trail is dry, dusty, steep, and unpleasant for a descent in the afternoon.

But it was nice to stand on top of Lone Peak again.

WasatchvoyageGreat late spring ascent via Bell's.  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 29, 2009

After doing both ridges on Bighorn Peak, Lone Peak was so close it had to be done. It's been about 15 years since I've been to this awesome summit. The traverse from the south summit over the knife ridge to the north summit was fun, though somewhat sketchy just off the south summit about 30 feet down on a loose section of snow. One slip on that portion of the ridge either lets you fall vertically about 900 feet into the cirque to the west, or plummeting down the steep snow chute to the east. The rest of the traverse, however, was a delight. Crossed back to the south summit, and entered Bells for the return trip on the headwall between Bighorn and Lone. Perfect day!

Also, my first summit with Dad in August of 1983. My Dad took me up to the south summit of Lone Peak with uncle Alan when I was nine years old. First real mountain! I came back in August of 1993 with my cousin Dave, where we stayed at the summit all night, returning the next day. Small area for a camp on Lone's 10' X 10' summit pinnacle.

A great experience, climbed 2 routes, The Center Thumb and The Lowe Route. Both were excellent, the crux on The Center Thumb is a very exposed lay back move using a finger crack, unforgettable!

This was the second time to the summit, first time was in January 2008, we made a ski ascent via Big Willow.

2/21/2009 With Dmitry, Joe, Michael, Dave, Grizz, Shelly, and Lee. A simply gorgeous day. Not windy at all. Warm but not uncomfortably so.

1/26/2008 With the WMC and summitposters. Not bad except for the big bad rock which required a big jump down and assistance up.

9/8/2007 Via Cherry Canyon Logging Trail after a 4 year absence.

9/6/2003 With WMC, led by Mohammed. Went up Big Willow and headed for the notch just S of 10561. This was not a good place to be with 12 people as the ones in the front were sending rocks down on those below. Went through the notch and traversed S a short distance to a gully that was followed to the main ridge and on to the summit. On the way down, we descended the scree slope into Big Willow Canyon. I put my hand out for balance at one point and that was enough to dislodge a large rock onto the back of my head. It knocked me over and I did a 360 but was able to hike out. Initially, I thought I should drive myself to the ER right away. Then I decided to go home and get my insurance info first. But, once I was home I figured I might as well eat and then figured I might as well take a shower, but I didn't want to mess with my head which was all bandaged up, so I didn't wash my hair. I should have because they had to do it at the hospital because I had so much blood matted in it they couldn't get through to my scalp. Also, I should note that at the hospital they separated me from my husband and grilled me to determine whether or not I was a battered wife.

8/31/2002 From Alpine. Also did Upper Bells Peak.

5/19/2001 From Alpine with MM.

10/7/2000 From Alpine with MM. Also did Upper Bells Peak.

11/23/1999 From Alpine with MM. Also did Upper Bells Peak. An awkward amound of snow.

7/17/1999 Via Draper Ridge Trail with lesdubois. It was clear on the way up, but clouds rolled in as we were descending and we were completely fogged in. Followed the wrong set of cairns and since some people would rather die than backtrack ended up doing a horrible 2 hour plus bushwhack to get to the Jacobs Ladder Trail which we followed back.

Joseph BulloughVarious ascents  Sucess!

Climbed 12 times:

2/20/09 - One of the nicest weather days I've ever had up there. Lots of snow on the summit - only room for one at a time.

10/18/08 - Climbed with Robert and Matt. Our original plan was to climb via the Orson Smith TH / Cherry Canyon trail, but there was a lot of snow on the upper mountain so we contoured over to Draper Ridge to complete the hike. Super nice day.

08/02/08 - Climbed from Bells Canyon with Robert. Peak #1 of the Hematoma Quad.

04/26/08: First ascent via Big Willow route. Celebrated Grizz's 100th ascent of the peak.

01/20/07: Winter ascent with the Wasatch Mountain Club via Cherry Canyon. Skies were totally clear entering the cirque but deteriorated to near-whiteout conditions on the summit, and snowed during the entire descent. Trip Report.

07/29/06 - Solo hike via Bells Canyon. Climbed North Thunder first, then traversed over South Thunder and Bighorn to Lone. Descended by backtracking to the Lone/Bighorn saddle, then dropped back into Bells Canyon.

01/22/06 - First winter ascent of the peak with the Wasatch Mountain Club, via Cherry Canyon/Draper Ridge. Low lying clouds down low, but crystal clear skies from the cirque on up. Beautiful day. Trip Report.

10/16/04 - Final peak of the day, after ascending Coalpit Gulch to North Thunder Mountain, then making the traverse to South Thunder and Bighorn. Descended via Cherry Canyon.

08/07/04 - Climbed solo via Cherry Canyon, then traversed over Bighorn, South Thunder, Chipman, and finished with the Pfeifferhorn. I began the hike with delusions of going all the way to Snowbird, but I wimped out upon reaching the Pfeifferhorn and descended down Red Pine Canyon.

07/01/04 - Climbed solo via Cherry Canyon, a much more pleasant route than my two previous ascents.

08/23/03 - via Draper Ridge (yuck). Badly overgrown and eroded trail down low, but we miraculously managed to stay on route.

09/03/00 - First ascent of the peak, via Jacob's Ladder. Got off route early but eventually got back on the trail. Nice to finally get on top after thinking about it for many years.

I lived in the shadow of Lone Peak my entire life to age 18. When I returned home from the service, my cousin and I decided to climb to the top from my home in Draper. We carried backpacks and camped one night below the peak and reached the summit the next day.
The day is approximate, the month and year are correct.

Date Climbed: Aug 9, 2008

We took 10 hours (with some long breaks), taking Jacobs Ladder. The granite in the cirque and on the summit ridge made for some great climbing, and it felt rewarding sitting on top of the tiny summit. The descent back down Jacobs Ladder was a little hard on the knees. See "Monarch of the Wasatch" trip report for details.
