Alpenglow5280Snowy September  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 26, 2009

Another great day on The Citadel. The snow is already piling up (2+ft in places) The gully to the saddle between the East and West summits was loaded with great, stable climbing snow which made dealing with the loose scree a non-issue. Descended on the ridge to the South of the summits and out Dry Gulch. The only thing that would have made the trip better are skis!

Date Climbed: Aug 20, 2009

Herman Gulch is a beautiful drainage. I understand why it sees so much traffic. The class 3 wasn't quite what I expected. It felt more like class 2 to 2+. But this is a beautiful double summit mountain. I've always thought so since driving over Loveland Pass in the winter to see it dominate the northern skyline. Looking down into the three drainages the Citadel dominates makes one feel very insignificant. We enjoyed perfect weather all day.

Date Climbed: Jun 27, 2009

On June 27th, the gully to the saddle between the summits was loaded with snow and undoable without crampons and axe! Scores highly on the bang for the buck. I suggest breaking from the trail early to make the tree line. This effort will be worth it. Encountered no people, but saw lots of wildlife and wildflowers

Great day up the Citadel. Got off route on some loose class 4 crap...not too fun. But the views were great. Traversed over to Hagar.

Date Climbed: Sep 27, 2008

Climbed with my daughter, and for both of us it was our favorite climb to date. The fall colors were indescribable and the airy finish was exhilarating.

Gareth"The Citadel" to Pettingell Peak Traverse  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2008

Finally.........
After this climb (The Citadel part) was suggested to me by Aaron and Kane four or so years ago, I finally did it. I teamed up with slowpoke and we did the fun traverse to Pettingell. The connecting ridge was fun and required lots of nice scrambling and one rappel. If we had just included Bethel, we would have done the "Herman Gulch Rim Job" route!

Climbed this intersting peak on a rainy summer day. We were soaked but not cold enough to care. The slick rock made for a hairy scramble.

My friend Mike was hit by falling rock near the West summit. It was a close call...I'm shocked his leg wasn't broken. Luckily we made it up and down safely. Very little snow in Herman Gulch right now, snowshoes still recommended.

Jason MooreThe Hidden Beast  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 2, 2007

Looking for class 3 climbing on questionable rock complete with copious amounts of dizzying exposure? I recommend The Citadel! This thing has taunted me for years from Loveland Pass- it looked rough and it certainly is. The beast proved to be an intense introduction to class 3 terrain. Most of the Dry Gulch (total misnomer, it was downright boggy in sections) hike is moderate class 2 which what I'm used to but the twin towers of the summit are a whole different story. The gully on the east tower was a bit beyond my comfort level so I opted for the wider scree-laden gully between the two towers. You have to really watch your footing, every handhold, and make sure not to dislodge any big rocks which is really easy to do. The conditions were perfect and the views from the west tower were amazing- I saw Mount Sopris beyond the Mount of The Holy Cross. The exposure was a bit overwhelming- I was shaking towards the top. I took a few photos and made a quick descent. I started the hike at 7:00, summitted at 10:00, and made it back down the car at 11:20.

A great climb to two fun summits. I wholeheartedly recommend using the 3+ gully to the right for the ascent rather than the dirty gully accessed by traversing left under the cliffs. Great climb and perfect weather - tough to beat.

There was no skiable line from the east summit as peakskier found on May 20, 2005. We skied down Snoopy's Collar, the south-facing summit gully. En route from Golden Bear Peak to Tricounty Elevation Point.

umbra altaRoute Climbed: Herman Gulch Date Climbed: October 1,2005  Sucess!

Climbed the harder (3+/4) gully to the right of the standard third class as noted below. Very rotten but preferable because the footing is actually more solid. Downclimbed the other (dirt) gully. This climb would probably be easier with consolidated snow in the gullies, but watch the southern exposure and resulting falling rock. Stick close to your partner and WEAR YOUR HELMET.
