Foxy Long BottomsRoute Climbed: Ascended 3rd class Gully Descended 4th class route Date Climbed: 9/1/05  Sucess!

Going up the chossy 3rd class gully proved to be one of the lamest 3rd class ascents I've done on a peak yet. Maybe I was in the wrong gulley? It was very chossy and loose. Handholds were necessary in spots but I didn't want to touch anything. Go up the 4th class Gully to the right. The climbing is a tad more technical but I felt that it was a lot safer due to the nature of the rock quality.

This was Erin's and my last climb in Colorado before our move to Pittsburgh, and it was a satisfying one. We chose the wrong gully that went up directly to The Citadel's east ridge. This involved some exposure and some fourth class, but it was really fun. We completed our tour of Dry Gulch by climbing Hagar and Golden Bear.

We camped the night before at the top of Dry Gulch and were able to summit in 2hrs from the campsite. An enjoyable route with an amazing summit!

virginiapineRoute Climbed: E. Face Couloir to col betw. E & W summits, scramble up Date Climbed: end of June, 2000  Sucess!

Indeed a very fun climb. This was my wife's (girlfriend at the time) first alpine climb and couldn't have been more fun. Went up the nice E. Face couloir to the col between the 2 summits, noting several goats scrambling about on the E. Face of the West Summit. The scramble up to the W. Summit was quite fun, as was the E. Summit on our descent, which continued down the regular E. Ridge route and then back down into the head of Herman Gulch.

We went off the east summit block, very interesting rocky first turns to a super steep couloir. Has anyone else ever skied this line from the true east summit of Citadel.

We had a great outing to an awesome summit. The snow conditions were great as was the weather. Also summited Bethal only to have one of my partners fall on his ice axe on the descent puncturing his sinus cavity above his left eye. Trip Report here.

As close as it is to Denver, the solitude one encounters on this very nice mountain is surprising. I've been on the mountain several times, summiting once, with Aaron and Mark. Another time I was with brother Chet, but we turned back due to weather. Nice, nice mountain--people, you're missing a good thing!

A great mountain. Climbed under threatening skies with my friend Steve and dogs Raymond and Sopris. We only ascended the West summit due to the weather. Perhaps a good descision as it was thundering and raining by the time we reached the car. I will go back though. Thanks for the excellent route description Aaron.

Brian JenkinsRoute Climbed: Ridge from Hagar Date Climbed: July 3, 2004  Sucess!

Third summit of the day! Came over from Hagar Mountain. Started getting slight headache from altitude on the way over. Traversed under the west summit to the gully and wanted to take the gully up. Snow was too soft though so we scrambled up the loose left side for a bit and then out onto the west pinnacle for the last half. Signed the summit register and then scrambled down to the snow-covered saddle between the two summit towers. Enjoyed the short crux dihedral and then an easy scramble to the east summit. Clouds starting to form by then so we headed down a couple hundred feet for a snack. Then onto the lower slopes where we encountered three goats eagerly shedding their thick coats. Descended into Dry Gulch slowly, staying on the slopes above treeline as long as we could. When we saw the trail below us we headed down through some boggy thin forests. Did the whole Trelease/Hagar/Citadel loop hike in 10 hours. Could've gone much faster if I hadn't have been sucking so much air the whole time but I'm used to that thick sea level air at home in Portland. I was just happy to have completed the loop and enjoyed the great views and fun scrambling.

The Dry Gulch approach is highly recommended. There are some boggy areas, but the lack of crowds or trails is a big draw for me. September is the BEST month for CO. No crowds, no thunderstorms, beautiful weather. The ridge to Hagar is a hoot!

What a cool mountain - the two summits make for some great pictures of one from the other. We had wonderful fall weather to enjoy and all the time in the world to spend on top. I would climb again and again.

Turned around at Herman lake due to weather that turned out to be nothing big. Very cool hike.

This is a really fun mountain. Aaron's route description couldn't be any more perfect. In my opinion, this climb is much more satisfying than any other mountain in the immediate area, including those crowded 14ers.

WOW! What a day, this has to be my best hike of the season to date. A very exciting peak and I hiked it with an excellent hiking partner and summitpost member colonelpyat.

Wow! What a day. Great weather, great scenery, great company, and a great mountain. Couldn't ask for more. The summit gully was filled with snow and that probably made for an easier ascent than when dry.

Wow! Another great day. I just had to take my father up there. No snow in the gully this time. Amazing difference after only eight days.

Went back and tried it from Dry Gulch this time. Encountered wind, clouds, snow, and sunshine in equal measure.

Aaron JohnsonRoute Climbed: Herman Gulch, Dry Gulch Date Climbed: July, August  Sucess!

I've climbed the Citadel five times. A sixth attempt was aborted by questionable weather. This is a great mountain and a definite favorite, in a gorgeous area and is often solitary. Loose rock in the summit gully demands careful footwork. The summit pitches are solid and a joy. The west summit must be among the tiniest in Colorado, and is a very exciting place. The east summit is roomy by comparison, but exposure on north and east sides will certainly grab your attention. A ten foot dihedral must be climbed to the east summit. This is a super spot to teach beginners about loose and solid Class 3 terrain. Great care and respect are required when climbing this exciting and rewarding mountain.
