sshanklePretty Big Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 8, 2009

In town on business, I climbed Cat in the Hat with Bob of JHMG to the summit of Mescalito. I led pitch 1 and the fantastic pitch 4. After the 6th pitch we climbed up 500' of 3rd & 4th class terrain to a final 5.7 pitch, then another 150' of 3rd & 4th class to the summit. Downclimbed and rapped the route of ascent.

Going to the summit makes this III+ 5.7'ish.

Great climb!

Fun easy climb. Great views. Got on the climb in the afternoon and had a great rap in the dark.

One of my favorite class 3 scrambles in Red Rock. We climbed up via Fern Canyon (North Fork of Pine Creek) and descended via Mescalito Fork and the South Fork of Pine Creek.

Headed out to Vegas just for one day to catch the Sisters of Mercy, and squeezed in a climb with Donnie before the show. A bit chilly in the shade, but nice in the sun... and consistently excellent rock and wonderful views. Steep, but good holds everywhere. Great fun.

Ran out of time to tag the summit, so we ended up rapping the route.

This was a fun climb. Lot of people on the route that day. Have some video of a climber at the crux on the last pitch. I took it from the trail. Looks scary!

1/21/06: Got to Red Rocks around 9 am and slept until noon after driving through the night. Wandered up Pine Creek to the base of the climb and headed up Cat in the Hat. The first two pitches went smoothly until we got stuck next to a very slow party of 5 rappelling from a tree anchor we were using. Not wanting to get mixed up in their ropes from above (they were pulling them) we opted to wait for them to pass. Over an hour later we left the belay. We had moved slowly on the lower two pitches, taking our time and enjoying ourselves. Pitch 4 (3 in the description on SP) I placed one piece and just cruised to make up lost time. We did the traverse, looked at the crack and opted not to do it. We moved into a flake system above the slung block belay as it was getting dark. It would probably go at 5.8+ but I backed off on the lead about 10-12 feet up and we bailed from there.

The descent was epic. Snarled ropes, rapping in the dark, getting cold, etc. We had one headlamp, which my partner dropped from 40 feet up on the last rappel. We found it but the batteries were lost (it lived!). We made our way down in the dark using the light on my old video camera, but we wandered through the stream and took a few falls before the camera's light died permanently. We got back to the car around 9:00 pm. Good first day in Red Rocks.

We plan to return to climb Tunnel Vision and some others if possible within the next few weeks.

Climbed the standard six pitch route. Great day climbing with Johanna. Unfortunately, we got stuck behind a very slow moving group. Ended up rapping and hiking out in the dark. So much for those plans to climb Dark Shadows.

Outstanding technical climbing on the first few pitches, leading to classic "desert peak" scrambling for the final half of the climb. Unique position. With Tom Scott.

A fun "classic." The hike is fairly straightforward, especially for Red Rocks. We enjoyed the fun climbing on an overcast, but dry, December day. The "hiking" sections were interesting; complete with a cairn on the first main ledge. Upper pitches very pleasant. We finally bumped into some fellow climbers--two couples were behind us. All in all, a good day of climbing.

Free-soloed the full 14 pitch version of Dark Shadows to the summit of Mescalito. It took about an hour from the base to the summit. I downclimbed horrendous chimneys and bushes to the top of Cat in the Hat, then I downclimbed Cat in the Hat.
