nicstandaertShort hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 1, 2009

I had breakfast in a route 66 cafe in Grants, then started driving up the mountain, looking for a trail. Saw a sign saying 'La Mosca lookout' and kept driving. From the lookout, full of antennas, and extremely windy, I saw a higher peak and assumed that to be Mt. Taylor. Went down to the saddle and hiked up the 'Gooseberry trail', which took me to the summit in half an hour and made it a really easy summit!, my first one in the US, clear view at the top.

ScottWinter Ascent  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 18, 2009

I made a winter ascent of Mount Taylor with my six year old son Kessler. The full trip report is below:

Trip Report

It was a rewarding climb and had taken us ten hours and 12 miles round trip. It was a record long distance for him on snowshoes and possibly for me as well.

jhodlofA great relaxing hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 31, 2008

I took my time and enjoyed this hike. It is really beautiful, and the trail is nice. It gets a little hard to follow near the stock tank, but its not that bad. This is the 1st of the 4 sacred peaks I plan to hike this summer.

Date Climbed: May 24, 2008

Isn't Memorial Day Weekend supposed to mark the beginning of summer? 18 inches of fresh snow aboce 11k with 3-4 inches at the trailhead. Had a hard time following the trail lower down due to the snow but managed to pick it back up again. Cloud ceiling at 10,900 prevented me from getting any kind of views on the summit. Guess I'll have to come back on a nicer day :)

StumblingBearA Favorite  Sucess!

This is a favorite of mine. The point is spend- the- night- on- the- summit! The summit has no trees but just below are some trees and some really nice camp spots. I usually pick the full moon nights, watch the sun set then the moon rise over a cup of tea.The last section of road before the parking area is the worst part of the climb.

Six2North Gooseberry Spring Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 28, 2007

Wanted to get a quick hike in to get acclimatized. We took the short route to the summit, instead of picking up the Gooseberry Spring trail from the south where it is a bit lower. FS road 453 comes up to a hairpin turn in a saddle below Taylor on the north side where you can pick up the Gooseberry Spring trail and hike ~1 mile to the summit, although the route is not as scenic as the southern route.

Walked up from downtown Grants. Slept on the summit. Awoke in the morning to find a medium sized black bear lifting large boulders and licking up whatever tasty grubs it could find underneath. Hiked as part of the Everett Ruess Trail 2001.

Fun hike on a beautiful day. Not too hot, even though the high in Abq was 94 that day. For a GPS track of the trail, click here.

Date Climbed: Sep 5, 2005

We had difficulty in finding the trailhead. We missed the trail sign twice and drove back and forth. Later during the hike, we we followed by two hunters who thought we were mule deer. We eventually heard them in the forest also and thought that they were the deer. Eventually, we all met on the meadows and had a good laugh.
Pleasant hike and a nice warm up before Wheeler Peak the next day. The slideshow from our hike is here, enjoy:

woodstriderSnow white and the 9 older gents  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 26, 2006

I arrived at night and found that the road was a bit hinky about a mile from the trailhead for the Gooseberry Spring trail so I parked and in the morning I found another road (FR195, which is not marked at it's beginning but is two miles before the Goosebery Trail head) and took that. This led to a bushwhack, which would not surprise anyone who knows me as I often end up off-trail. This led to finding interesting stuff, like "bearing trees" and bears and a race track. Made it to the top to find 9 older gents finishing up lunch. Went down the Trail to see what I had missed and got a lift back to my car. Thanks Frank for the great gorp- it lasted for the rest of my trip.
Walk in Beauty.

I am adding this edit as I see that many people have difficulty finding the trail head.

The trail-head is well marked, there are like three signs, a small parking area big enough for at least 6-8 cars and when I was there someone had laid down white gravel for the first 10 feet of the trail, making it stand out.

I did not get to the trail-head on my visit as I was unsure if my car would make it- there were alot of pot holes and rocks in the road. The problem is that the scenery is a knock out- I think people are just not paying attention. I followed the directions off this page and found them to be spot on.
