| Diggler | Good thing each 14er doesn't cost $100... ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 23, 2009 | |
| otherwise I wouldn't be doing these... Did this one with my pops. Long drive from Parker to San Luis, though uneventful. Stayed at the San Luis Inn the night before. Difficult to crawl out of bed in time to get to the gate by 6.00. Carlos met us @ gate @ 5.51, & herded us all to the ranch 'headquarters,' where we all drained our bank accounts- this was easily the most difficult part of the climb. Following this demoralizing experience, drove to 'Four-way.' Leaving here @ 6.58, I descended some 520' (to 10,700', according to my altimeter; was 7.24 when I turned around) to ensure I'd have the necessary 3k' elevation gain. Dad waited slightly above while I did this. Was back at Four-way at 6.58. From here we hiked to the standard 4WD parking lot. We hiked around the curve skirting the adjacent hill here, before turning to go up the slopes leading to the ridgeline. Popped up onto ridge slightly prior to the enormous cairne. Ridge straightforward from here to summit, entailing primarily enjoyable class 2 scrambling. Ascent displayed ample evidence of perhaps the largest rodent infestation of any peak I've ever been on. Encountered others descending, who with the exception of 1 guy all parked at the highest parking lot, had started much earlier than we did. Summited at 11.37. Popped & enjoyed some Avery 14er ESBs, took in the great SoCo views, & tried to savor this most expensive of summits. Views of the Sierra Blanca in particular were great. Left summit at 12.23. Descent somewhat time-consuming but fairly mellow overall. Had the mountain to ourselves at this point. Back at Fourway at 15.52. Great day in the Rockies with my favorite Dad! | ||

| Was joined by my friend Rich. We camped at the ranch gate where we are met by Carlos at 6 in the morning. After getting checked in with the 20 or so other people we drove up the good, but steep, dirt road to the upper parking area. Rich and I headed up to the ridge on the left and then circled past the huge cairn before hitting the final ridge ascent. While not a big fan of paying to hike, I'd say the $100 was well spent for the weather was great, the scenery glorious, and Carlos was very friendly and helpful to a late arriver. | ||

| Hiked with large 14ers.com group. The weather looked threatening all morning and I finished the hike to Culebra & Red Mountain just before it let loose. Crappy weather sucks worse than normal when money is on the line. | ||

| This was a 14ers.com climb of Culebra. We paid the extra $50 and climbed Red as well. We were hurried on the way back from Red by a thunder storm. This was my third climb of Culebra and my second climb of Red. | ||

| rleclair | Franklin Peak...errrr Culebra Peak ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 10, 2008 | |
| Hiked the "standard" route up Culebra on a ever changing weather day with great friends Alan and Patrick. Although I'm still partially bugged about paying $100 to hike to the summit (I know, I know it's private property), I have to say it is probably the prettiest 14er I've hiked in a long time. Abundant marmots with young, an elk herd below treeline and a sweet 4WD road to the upper lot with little impact from humanity in the sense of not a well worn trail but one heck of a cairn midway up. Worth it... | ||

| Climbed with my friend Kevin and the other 24 persons in the 14er.com group. An unusual bushwhack/scramble climb of follow the leaders with a nice mix of guys and girls. Started up after 7:00AM and back to the parking lot at 11:50. My 35th 14'er on this beautiful morning in southern Colorado..........sweet! | ||

| Marni and I joined a group of friendly dog owners for the first legal dog climbing of Culebra peak in 10 years (or so we heard). It was a pretty cold and windy day but the snow was manageable and we got the summit in sunshine. Number 9 for me and Marni and number 53 for another Golden Retriever we were with, Sawyer. Thanks to Josh for organizing the trip. | ||
