Date Climbed: Aug 22, 2009

Combined Horn with Fluted and Little Horn on a bluebird summer day. Nice trail which didn't make it feel as steep as it is. Ridge run to Fluted and Little Horn offers some optional scrambling.

Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2009

Third peak of the day after Little Horn and Fluted. The ridge on the Fluted side has some easy scrambling near the summit and was much more interesting than the Horn Peak Trail, which I used for the descent back to the trailhead.

I did climb Horn Peak and carried most of the way my son to the top. Nice mountain.

Date Climbed: Jun 23, 2009

My Dad and I climbed Horn Peak on the Horn Peak Trail. The day started out sunny and cloudless, but by the time we reached the treeline there were clouds gathering. This was my third time to climb Horn Peak, and once we got to the summit, we came right back down. On the ridge, a sleet storm came in and the temperature dropped. A few words of advice: bring a warm coat and DO NOT get a cheap rain poncho. If it gets windy, the poncho will be of no use, as I and my dad found out. It was an incredibly hard hike, but the view was very rewarding.

still plenty of snow to deal with in the trees along the East Ridge trying to follow the Horn Peak Trail. The snow was quite rotten and difficult even in snowshoes at times. No crampons needed. Above treeline, it was free of snow. Great views of the Crestones.

The trail was 95% cover with snow 1 mile above the sign in to the tree line. Above Harlequin Creek the trail was buried. Used crampons in the morning and the afternoon was a post-hole-a-thon even with snow shoes. Got a great glissade on the way down.

This was my first solo hike in winter-like conditions. I'll always remember it.

Beautiful, clear day. Took the standard route from Horn Creek trailhead. My first encounter with marmots. Friendly buggers in the rocks along the final ridge. There are some spots to camp just in the treeline, if you'd cache a little water. Give you the option to continue to Fluted Peak and others.
Views from the peak were spectacular. Fluted Peak at center.

Mt Adams, Kit Carson Mt, (Challenger/Columbia Pts) and the Crestones. Little Horn, front left.

Did this one with my dad. We went up the Horn Peak Trail but came down via Dry Creek. We dropped straight down to the lower Dry Lake from the summit, staying right of the gully on the south face. If I were to do it again I think I'd take the east ridge down a few hundred feet and then hit the tundra on the south face.

In my opinion Horns look is better than its standard route. Very ardous indeed. Horn would be a good one for winter.

A beautiful November day, but some serious trail breaking from 10,700 and up! Kicked my butt, but it was worth it for the views.

Did it again with a buddy. Climbed through the clouds to clear, windless skys above 11,000 feet. A total cloud deck below us so the mountains were just sticking through...NICE!

Took my friend Jennifer up for her first mountain summit! The trail could use a little maintenance up high. The view of Silver Cliff and Westcliffe was grand. I can see my house in Silver Cliff from the summit.

Incredible 360 from the top. It was just the right length for a nice climb for an afternoon.

CORDILLERAORIENTALRoute Climbed: Horn Peak Trail Date Climbed: August 2004

Attempted this mtn with my young and beautiful Wife..........we failed miserably! We needed more lungs and legs. Our high point was the lower peak that you can see from the valley @ about 12,600'. Great view!

We hope to bag it this August. The Sangres are beautiful mountains. Do yourself a favor and stop in at the Alpine Lodge for a meal. It's located at the Alvarado Campground (Comanche-Venable trailhead). It's a great restaurant, nestled in the trees @ 9,000 feet and it's got a few cabins as well. It makes a great base camp if you wanna spend a few days bagging some peaks, and want a shower, bed, and a good meal each evening!

Windy and fun. Horn Peak was to be my birthdat present to myself last year but weather intervened. Still I generaly return to mountains that stike my fancy and Horn Peak is no exception. Sopris and Ray dogs along for the ride.

Wonderful weather, and we didn't cross a single patch of snow the whole way. This is a great early season climb. See my route page for more info. on the hike, and go here for a brief trip report.

GrantRoute Climbed: East Ridge Date Climbed: June 16, 1986  Sucess!

Don't recall much about the route, but I know we headed straight for the ridge leading down to the east. There was a small sub-peak to go over also. Pretty steep, and was my first major peak to ever climb.

Ironically this peak gave me my first feeling of static electricity running through my hair. Good thing the leader knew what it was and told me to run down, and after rapidly going down 30 feet the feeling went away. I’m glad that I haven't felt that since, and hope to never feel it again.
