Date Climbed: Jul 18, 2009

Meetup.com trip. I had thought about going to Smith Lake after we set up camp, but there was still plenty of sunlight, and another camper suggested Devils Causeway. Boy, am I glad she did. The weather was perfect, and the scenery is magnificent. The wildflowers are spectacular up there right now. One of our group was a little wary about going on the Causeway, but the rest of us did. Looks like I'll have to add the Flat Tops as one of my favorite places anywhere.

I climbed it with my dad and had a blast. My favorite part was crossing the causeway.

After getting the weekend off last minute, we hurried and packed the gear Friday night to head off to the Flat Tops. We arrived fairly late and camped just below Stillwater Reservoir.

In the morning (sort of chilly, but not cold: 31F), Shaylee (four years old), Kessler (six years old), Kim and I set off for the Devils Causeway. It was very windy and somewhat chilly so Shaylee and Kim decided to head down at timberline and just below the saddle north of the Causeway. Kessler and I went up to and over Peak 11820 to the Causeway and he had a lot of fun crossing it. I made sure he held my hand the entire time.

After crossing the causeway, we headed SW and completed the entire Causeway Loop (10.5) miles. It was a great day; quite windy and chilly but with zero threat from thunderstorms.

Passing through the area so I hiked up quickly in the afternoon and evening. Smoky, but still great views. Lots of snow still on the plateau.

Climbed to the Causeway from Stillwater and returned the same way. Excellent, quick hike. Not as narrow as everyone made it seem to be, but still a great feeling of exposure and superb views!

Crossed the Causeway on the way back from a trip up Derby Peak. I'd been hiking most of the day with a full pack after getting a poor night's sleep at my camp on the Flat Tops and the first thought I had when I came to the crossing was that it would only be an extra five miles to turn around and go back the way I had come. Pretty daunting exposure but no more difficult than walking on a rough trail.

This was our main goal.. We went backpacking in the Flat Tops and the first night set up camp in the dark nearly halfway up the side of the burnt mountain. It was amazing to wake up to a burn foreset without ever seeing it before. Unfortunately (as my luck would have it) the next day when we started hiking again the weather got bad. By the time we reached to top of the Flat Tops the clouds were getting more and more electrical. So we turned back disappopinted. We flipped a coin when we got back. (heads Steamboat, tails aspen) luckily it was heads and the Strawberry Park Hot Springs were awesome.

The Flat Tops were very cool! These mountains reinforced to me how many different types of mountains and rock that Colorado really has. Kara, Earl, and I had a blast with the short section of exposure!

A real rush for sure, especially wearing a loaded backpack. My fiancee refused to watch me cross. The Flat Tops are an amazing place, although it was very hot during our visit.

I loved the Causeway crossing - the hilight of the hike. The Chinese Wall is very impressive and the massive amounts of tundra are awesome.

2003: Returned to the Causeway because it's so much fun. Executed the hike in reverse, got lots ofpics on the Causeway.

2002: Outstanding and excellent hike. Great views, gorgeous area, lots of lakes and wildlife. The highlight is the crossing of the causeway. Great fun, but not for the faint of heart.
