| I started at the Heinrich-Schweiger Haus (2802m) and climbed the rocks directly to the Kaindlgrat (Kaindl Ridge) on the NW shoulder of the Grosses Wiesbachhorn. Once on the ridge, I put on crampons and summited the Wiesbachhorn. It was still early when I returned to the glacier which separates the two mountains; it is called the Kaindlkees. I crossed it (unroped, which is not a good idea) and started into a scree covered face that despite being quite steep and very loose, offered plenty of good scrambling straight up to the summit. Using hands but no crampons or axe, I made it up to the summit in time to meet a large party of climbers crossing from the other direction (from the Klockerin, 3425m). I signed the summit log, enjoyed the view and headed back down the same route I had climbed. The weather was perfect and although I had been kicked around on the summit of the Wiesbachhorn, there was almost no wind at all on the Bratschenkopf. Back on the glacier, I crossed to the NE and rejoined the Kaindlgrat which took me back to the hut. It was a great day and I will never forget the view of the Wiesbachhorn from the summit of the Bratschenkopf. |
