jrfRGP and the Window  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 11, 2009

Amazing place. This will be one of my most memorable climbs. The peak itself has some loose spots but the views and the remoteness more than make up for it. One of the very best in Colorado.

Date Climbed: Nov 17, 2007

Were were lucky to be able to do this hike so late in the season. The lack of snow was odd, but we took advantage of it and backpacked into the Rincon La Vaca drainage. From high camp we made a loop over UN 13017, "Window Peak", Rio Grande Pyramid, UN 13278 & UN 13261. Long day in a remote, magical kind of place.

Date Climbed: Oct 25, 2007

Glen and I climbed up to the ridge to Point 12,911 and ridge hiked the whole way across to Point 13,278 up RGP East Slopes and down it's south facing couloir and over to "The Window".
Stopped multiple times. The weather was as perfect as one could wish for. NO WIND in three days!! Amazing.
This drainage and mountain are spectacular and awe-inspiring. Well worth the time to make this hike/climb.
Saw a herd of 30+ elk and two moose.

Went up with my dad during a backpack up Rincon La Vaca. Great view from up top. A sunrise visit to The Window was also memorable.

djilkEast slopes, challenging scramble  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 24, 2006
Climbed east slopes route from camp above Weminuche Pass. Opal Lake trail, although clearly not maintained, is still quite passable with a few scratches from the willows. This is a hike until the cone starts at 13,200', at which point it is a touchy scramble up steep, loose talus and scree. Views from the top were tremendous.

mmoerkRoute Climbed: East Slopes / Skyline Trail Date Climbed: August 20, 2005  Sucess!

After my failed attempt in 2004 (too much snow) I decided to try again after everything had dried off. Tiffany, Bailey, and I went up the Skyline Trail and then back via Rincon La Vaca. Rain was messing with us off and on, and with the threat of a thunderstorm we didn't have time to visit The Window. Skyline Trail is a more direct route but Rincon La Vaca is definitely more scenic. This is a beautiful area.

What a unique experience. The hike to the pass was nice and quiet, as I didn’t see anyone (until I was at the pass). The area was a change from the harsher alpine areas that I had become accustomed to. That evening I sipped coffee as I gazed at the world around me as the day started to drop into sleep and I was lucky enough to spot three moose in the valley below. The next day I didn’t see anyone until I had almost returned to the pass. I had the Pyramid and the Window all to myself. The rock up on the peak is loose and required a certain care, but wasn’t too bad. At the top I was treated to a great view, especially of the Needles and Grenadiers. After I descended the Pyramid it was off to the Window (over even looser terrain). For some reason I almost thought that the view of the Needles and Grenadiers was better through the Window.

charmsRoute Climbed: South Rock Slide Date Climbed: July 10, 2004  Sucess!

Wow!!!! What a view!! We climbed up from East Ute Creek and circled around to the rock slide just north of the "Window". It is loose, but it is a very fun scramble up to the west face and on to the top. Photos to come.

I climbed this mountain alone in fair weather from my campsite near Weminuche Pass after hiking in from Rio Grande reservoir the previous afternoon. On the way back I also climbed the unnamed 13268 ft peak just to the east. I saw no one on either peak that day.

If you like wonderful views, then Rio Grande Pyramid needs to be on your list. This peak has the best views of the entire San Juan Mountain Range. There is abundant wildlife in the area, and were not easily spooked with our presence.

Aaron JohnsonRoute Climbed: East Slopes Date Climbed: August, 1986  Sucess!

I climbed this awesome peak with MA and Lori Ewing on a perfect San Juan summer day, long before any definitive route description was written and peak bagging was in its infancy. Few people had visited the summit that year or the year prior. As climbing grows more popular, perhaps the Pyramid has as well, but I'm willing to concede that I may be the only SP member to sign this summit log for a very long time. The Pyramid is as remote as you can get! A trip to the Window is worth it if you can manage it. Wow! What a place, and what a mountain! For the south San Juan, RGP is KING!
