CWesselsOhlone Trail   Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 7, 2009

From Del Valle. This trail is AWESOME in the cool of winter! And this peak feels very remote, especially when fog lines the valley below. Highly recommend if your in the Bay Area and looking for adventure.

Beautiful green hills with clear skies for miles. Cows watched my wife and me as we took about 7 total hours to complete the trips. I disagree with the "anticlimatic" aspect of the peak; we found it quite nice. Nice view of the Sierras and surrounding ranges too.

Date Climbed: Jun 16, 2008

Good trip through the Ohlone wilderness trail with my younger bro. Started in Livermore at Del Valle, hike goes uphill steep and fast. Not much time to warm up, just get after it... Camped out at Maggie's, killer sunset up there with a bit of a haze from recent fires, but not too bad on the lungs. How many cows are on this trail?! The one with the white mohawk was giving me the stink eye. Thought he might charge. Would have made a tasty steak.

Nice day with few other hikers out on the trail. Weather was near perfect. Views were little hazy. Due to the dry spring most wild flowers were gone for the season.

Another bay area 'peak' I've done over and over in past years.

Clear but windy today, gusts to 35-40mph on the ridges. ~20 miles / 3800' gain in 6 hours 20 minutes.

SFMountaineerOhlone Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 20, 2008

Did the 28 mile Ohlone Wilderness Trail in two days, starting from Stanford Ave. A really fantastic hike. However, clouds rolled in on day 2 and the view from the summit were nil. Still, it was quite eerie (and cold) up there, with dozens of knarley oaks surrounding us in the dense fog. The total silence of the fog, with the exception of drops of condensation falling from the oaks, was a unique experience. Will return in spring and climb from Sunol. Was able to see the beautiful landscape from Sunol to the backpacker's camp, but pretty much missed the vistas from the backpacker's camp to Rose Peak.

WeatherManLong Day... not for summer  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 15, 2007

Starting from Geary Rd and the Horse barns, this hike rounds out at just over 20mi. There is a lot of exposure, and almost no water after the springtime, so be sure to BYOS(shade). This is a great hike to train for long trips, it offers distance, climbs, and off-season accesability.

That was a lot of uphill!! I started out with the intention of making this a trail run, but found I had to walk all of the uphill. I can't believe how steep some parts of the trail were. At least I was able to run the flats and downhill. Left from Del Valle Park at 7:30 am and summited at 10:00 am. The way back was much more pleasant. No wildflowers this time of year.

It sure felt like a lot of up & down, confirmed by 5979 total ascent on my GPS! Liked it so much I might try to summit this “in reverse” from the Stanford Ave. side later this week ;)

Scott FultonOhlone Wilderness Trail 50K  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 21, 2006

I summited Rose Peak almost 6 hours after beginning the Ohlone Wilderness Trail 50K ultramarathon, which started at Stanford Avenue in Fremont. Thankfully we had better weather than this race usually has, and it was drizzling lightly from Sunol all the way to the top of Rose Peak and beyond. At the end of the race, I forgot about all the uphill because I was suffering through all the relentless, unrunnable downhill.

DigglerRoute Climbed: From La Valle Regional Park Date Climbed: 25 April, 2005  Sucess!

Started from campground parking lot @ 11.50. Beautiful area, off & on weather (rain actually made the experience that much more dramatic!). Took a side trip to 'Discovery Peak (summiting @ 15.51),' summiting Rose Peak @ 16.58. Subsequently got my drink, snack, & toke on @ summit before departing @ 17.21. Reached TH @ bike @ 21.00. In summary, ~20 mi RT, 5,300' total elevation gain, motorcycle-to-motorcycle time: 9:10.

Overall impression: beautiful area, phenomenal wildflower exhibits, & great workout. Cool wildlife encounters included vulture swooping ~20' over my head, the garter snake encountered on the trail that played dead (except for its tongue which it couldn't keep from flickering in & out of its mouth), & hearing the cries of a hawk in close proximity. $6 parking fee @ a regional park is bullshit.

A good warm up hike. We were the only people on the summit. Was quite windy on top. Clouds blocked any great views of the Bay Area. But really pretty rolling green hills and other wildlife. Spring is a good time to do this hike.

A long but scenic trail. Avoid during the summer but on a nice winter day it's great. The summit itself is not spectacular in the least but it was a fun hike. 7 hours ctc. Cows a-plenty.

MaverixRoute Climbed: Ohlone Wilderness Trail from Sunol Regional Park Date Climbed: January 8, 2004  Sucess!

Reached the Sunol Regional Wildnerness kiosk at 7:30am, the attendant wasn't there so I didn't have to purchase a parking permit. I had planned to purchase a Ohlone wilderness trail permit at the kiosk, but since it wasn't open, I just opted to head on out for the hike. Parked as far south as I could on Camp Ohlone Road, and walked the rest of the way, taking a left turn beyond the 'W' tree. Took Backpacker trail up to the Ohlone Wilderness trail which I followed to Rose Peak (about an 8.5 mile walk one way from the car). The trail gradually climbs up to the peak, except at trail marker 25, where the trail detours through a valley to the next ridge to the south and a short downhill is reached. Made it to the summit in under 4 hours. On the way back I took a slightly different route back, following Welsh Creek road for a time, in order to avoid a herd of cows that I had met up with that morning (shoo cows!). Really enjoyed the hike.
