weeds19A Great Oct Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 24, 2009

Doing this in two days would really be punishment. I carried about 200 oz for my day trip and that really wasn't enough on this day that reached the low 90s in Temp. Having to carry enough water for two days and a night would push that number much higher and thus add a lot of weight.

The roller coaster ridge was actually enjoyable because of the spectacular views of the dry (and should be dry... Salton) lake beds.

ZeRe: Via Villager

yeah its definitely around 8500' cumulative gain!

benjamingrayRe: Via Villager

I think 5696' is the NET gain/loss, is that possible? The valley floor is at 1100' and Rabbit is 6600', and I believe there is almost 3000' of ups/downs along the way. Crazy with the wind.

Departed Villager at 7am made Rabbit Peak in 3:15 hours. I signed the summit log, found a geocache, ate lunch, and took a nap. Made it back to Villager in about 3 hours.

The bumps to Rabbit from Villager and back are many and I agree, it is a roller coaster. My data shows Total climbing/Total Descent of 5696'/5696' (out and back).

I used 3 liters of water for the out and back trek and 3 liters for the return trip to the car at S-22.

I fought the most serious-unrelenting-fiercest wind all day long--knocked me down 6 times on the 14 mile day trek. Many times I had to skirt the ridge in order to walk upright. I even slipped once and the wind held me up preventing a fall!

All in all it was a great day to be out. I'll update this post later with a trip report.

Almost made it. Hiked to Villager, setup camp and continued on to Rabbit. Made it to the last mile before bailing back to Villager. Awesome night on the summit of Villager with no wind and bright moon.

Climbed with Marcus and Eric from the south, spending the night on Villager. Then Rabbit in the morning and back to the car by 4:30. My alt watch seemed a bit off, like 100ft short on Villager and Rabbit...but total feet climbed said 12k. Don't believe people who say it's 8500 total feet. This climb is a roller coaster.

With Miguel Forjan. I was thinking it was the peak further to the north northwest. Thinking I would absolutly never make it, I turned back only to realize later (Miguel phoned me from Rabbit)that I really was 1/2 way to Rabbit and probably would of made it. Miguel did summit Rabbit. Still had another awesome day in the hills with a great friend.

Date Climbed: Nov 22, 2008

Two days & one night round trip from S22 via Rattlesnake Ridge. Great weather; 60's & low 70's, high visibility, Little wind. Carried 2 gallons of water & needed every drop. Stashed 1.5 liter 3 hours out. Incredible vistas of Anza Borrego. Awesome 3,000? foot vertical escarpment. Day 1 about 7 hours to top of Villager Peak (roughly 5,500'). Day 2 summit Rabbit and return to car 10 hrs. Mistake to take less than a liter of water for round trip from Villager to Rabbit. Should have had 1.5 liters at least for this 5-hour section. It was nice to go at modest pace and really take it all in. Ocatillo, Prickly Pear, Barrel, cholla, yucca. Each carving out their own tight enclaves. TSE

jkvawterFrom all directions  Sucess!
My first trip was with Bill Davenport and Bill McKowen in the late 1980's. We were going to do Snow Creek, but were turned back by a storm. They owned a lemon ranch near the start of the east approach to Rabbit where we spent a night, and started early the next morning. We did that as a two-day back pack. A few years later I approached from the south with Werner Landry as a day hike from S-22. I bonked at the bottom of the last steep bit to the summit, and waited for him to pick me up on his way down. A few years later we did a two-day trip up the west side, camping near the airplane wreckage.

I had another failed attempt with Werner and Mark Richards while trying to go from Toro to S-22 in two days. I had a shooting pain down the back of one leg and fell behind. At 6582 I had too much pain to do any more climbing, and dropped off the ridge. I spent the night at the base and hiked to the highway the next day. On S-22 I got a ride on a motorcycle, and beat them back to the car on Sunday afternoon.

I repeated the west approach a few years later with Jim (?) to stash water for a Toro to S-22 hike the following weekend. We carried three gallons each to the summit for a party of four plus one. The next weekend four of us left Toro on Saturday and hiked to a point about two miles short of Rabbit. On Sunday morning Werner left Toro with a quart of water and few energy bars. We kept in touch with him by radio. Every time we stopped to rest that day we took a few more Ibuprofen for knee pain. We left water for Werner on 6582, Rabbit, and Villager. He arrived at S-22 about a half an hour after we did at dusk on Sunday.

Had this one on my mind for a while, finally got around to it...3:15 to Villager, 5:45 to Rabbit, 11:05 RT. A tough dayhike for sure.

X2 - April 16 2009. 2:30 to Villager, 4:24 to Rabbit, 8:55 RT with 25 mins on top. The descent from Villager hurt bad.

The rabbit is missing from the register now...

The mountains were red from the sunrise as I was hiking the last couple miles to Rabbit from Villager. Wonderful, butt kicking hike.

Date Climbed: Apr 6, 1980

Easter 1980 with my brother Fritz. Hauled full packs and 2 days water up to Villager and camped 1st day. Bagged the bunny and hiked all the way down the next day. I thought the pain in my knees would kill me on the downhill hike.

Third time up this route--though can't ever find the register anywhere. Hunted all over the rocks on the west side and hiked nearby ridges, but no dice. (Could use a GPS point!) Hiked down a "shortcut" this time b/c spent too much time looking for that blasted box (BIG MISTAKE), and nearly rolled all the way down with a rockslide. Hiked Villager Peak in 2004--no page for that peak yet?
