| Sonora Peak was my first peak in the area. I hiked up it from the pass and I was really blown away by the view. I remember Stanislaus Peak as being really cool to look at. I remember fishing on the Walker River on the drive down, and it was a long drive back to Auburn. It was in the early 1990's that I lived in the area. | |

| "Easy" finish to a 8-peak 7-day Sierran jaunt. I say "easy" because I managed to take probably the two most difficult routes up and down this peak.. full of loose volcanic scree and steep gullies. I should've stuck with the use trails. | |

| Made the mistake of following Gary Suttle's suggestion to just climb right up the southwest slope through the neverending volcanic scree. I must have come up the steepest part, ha! It was a miserable slog, and I recommend against it highly. With the angle somewhere aroung 30-40% in places, and very loose, it was tough to climb that 600 feet, slipping a couple feet every couple steps. Definitely class 2 climbing here. Should have come to SummitPost first. There is a very nice use trail that ascends very sensibly up the more reasonably-sloped northwest slopes from the saddle to the summit. I used this use trail to descend, and was VERY easy to follow back to the sloping plateau between the peak and Saint Marys Pass. Trip down was refreshing and easy. Weather was a bit blustery for this time of the year, had to bust out my winter shell and gloves at Saint Marys Pass. Views from the summit were absolutely amazing, with sweeping views in ALL directions! Very clear skies. Got in the car and drove to Lone Pine immediately afterward and began a hike up to Cottonwood Lakes for an attempt the next day on Mount Langley. | |
