truchasRoute Climbed: Irving Creek Date Climbed: August 11, 2003  Sucess!

This was a very tiring summit bid after backpacking in the previous afternoon and camping at the convergence of Irving Creek into Vallecito Creek. Besides the bushwacking up Irving Creek, the final 1,000 ft. was full of very unstable loose rock. The views however from the summit were incredible. The views alone make this a worthy summit.

Our summit bid for Mount Oso was thwarted by high winds. We got incredible pictures of this wild and remote area during uncommonly calm weather, so we did not come away from this valuable experience empty handed. I don't know if I'll ever have an opportunity to try Mount Oso again. If so, I'd try another route just to be somewhere I haven't been before. I highly recommend the Rock Creek route simply on the staggering beauty of the place. This is spectacular San Juan country at its most remote and pristine best!

Oso is hard to reach and hard to climb. Oso is also the only mountain I've attempted, failed to summit and did not return for another bid. Hopefully someone in the meantime will prove me different and I'll have the pleasure of editing this text accordingly (which happened when ATTM climbed it-see above).

Edit: ATTM contacted me about climbing Oso years after I had been there. I cheered him on and he succeeded. Congrats to him! Will I make it back? Time will tell...so many mountains...
