tiogaLong Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 13, 2008

Began at the Old Rag parking area and climbed over Old Rag, descended via the Saddle Trail, then up the Old Rag Fire Road, taking a right hand turn onto Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail, crossing Skyline Drive, and up the Stony Man Trail to the summit. On the descent we had to make a pit stop into Skyland Resort to find water and interrupted the Apple Butter Festival there. Then we headed back down the Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail to the Old Rag Fire Road, took a left on the Corbin Hollow Trail and finished on the Weakley Hollow Fire Road. It was approximately a 17.7 mile day.

Easy, very enjoyable summit. The view from up there is the best in SNP, even with wind, pouring rain, and fog obscuring parts of the view.

As if the views from the summit weren't enough, I got to look out over the Little Stony Man Cliffs as well! A fine hike.

Buz GroshongDid it many times  Sucess!

Several great hikes include a climb of Stony Man. Last summer, for a training hike, I started from the Old Rag parking lot in Nethers and went up Nicholson Hollow, the Corbin Mountain Trail, and the Old Rag Fire Road followed by a climb of Stony Man and then a return down Nicholson Hollow.

Part of a loop that included Little Stony Man and the Passamaguoddy Trail. Parked at the south entrance to Skyland (near the stables)

dandrewGreat memory!

Backpacked up with my Scout troop in April 1994(?)...we slept on a small ledge just below the summit on the edge of a cliff. Woke up to snow the next morning...hiked down to take on White Oak Canyon and Old Rag.

We lucked out with the weather for a day in March. Temps were in the high seventies and I was greatly impressed by the peaks in Shenandoah National Park including Stony Man. Gorgeous views over the valley. We saw some Peregrin Falcons as well. Great place!

Quick little hike up top. Kinda concerned when I got up there and it was covered with the undergrowth but then came up on the bluffs and overlook. Good look out towards Mass-of-nothing Mountain and the Shenandoah Valley. The sun also was trying to come out by this time late in the afternoon.
