NelsonHourglass to Boulder-Grand  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 9, 2009

Enjoyable hike with SP'er brenta. Lion Lakes area is spectacular and deserves return visits. Agree with others that Hourglass ascent route is easier and less exposed than some guidebooks suggest. Boulder-Grand Pass descent is tedious loose scree, but not very long. Took us exactly 12 hours car-to-car. Great day.

argothorSouth Ridge ascent - Hourglass descent  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 26, 2009

Hiked up to Thunder Lake and set up camp. The next morning hiked up past Lake of Many Winds to the Boulder-Grand Pass. Then headed up the relatively gentle southern slopes. After saying hello to some marmots at the summit, headed down the steep northern face and headed across the Hourglass Ridge. Eat lunch in the saddle between Alice and Chiefs Head. Shared the saddle with 6 male Bighorn Sheep. Had planned on doing Chiefs Head as well but the weather wasn't cooperating. So headed down the ridge towards Lion Lakes, but instead of returning to Thunder Lakes via the established trails we headed to the small unnamed lake above Fan Falls, which by the way is quite beautiful. Thought about heading down beside the falls but way too difficult, so we headed down the gully just to the west and then brushcrashed back to Thunder Lake. Hiked out the following day.

The most incredible hike I ever did. The Lion Lakes were incredible. This trip took quite a few hours as it is a lot of miles but will never be forgotten

Hiked both peaks after a camp at the North Saint Vrain backcountry campsite. This was one of the most beautiful hikes of my life, passing by two waterfalls (Trio Falls and Fan Falls) and four lakes (Lion Lake Number 1, Lion Lake Number 2, Snowbank Lake, and unnamed lake above Fan Falls).

Hourglass section is a walk. Definitely a nice area, but the climb is not as exciting/exposed as it is described. North face is a fun huff-and-puff scurry. Running shoes were ideal, the trail is far too long to lug along solid boots. 9.5 hours.

A nice training run in a beautiful setting. Agree that the standard route up the hourglass has little class 3, though some can be found on the extreme right of the ridge. Boulder grand pass has a snow free passage down it, no gear required.

KaneHourglass Ridge

Huge mountain. Combines well with Chiefs Head. Hourglass isn't much a a 3rd class climb, more like a class 2+. A little messier than I anticipated too. Great Mountain.

Very long day, but not difficult, just long.

we started at 3am, got to the car 12 hours later.

Great day out. Trail running shoes are ample for this climb. Take a water filter to fill up on the way back to the car.

Awesome climb! LONG approach! (so start early). We started at 3:10 a.m. but a better (more relaxed) start time might have been 2:30 a.m.

The trail in was steeper than anticipated but certainly "doable". Once at Lion Lake #1 you have a terrific view of Alice and the approach. Distances in the mountains are, however, deceptive so what looked "easy" still required a lot of scrambling and perseverence.

Ultimately reached the summit at 10:10 a.m. Descended via Boulder Grand Pass. Must be very careful coming down the "chute" to Lake of the Many Winds. Very steep and loose.

From Lake of the Many Winds we followed a narrow trail down to Thunder Lake and then followed the trail proper back to the trailhead. Arrived back at parking lot at 4:10 p.m. Tired but happy!

On this day we only saw one other group of climbers (4 in that group) besides ourselves. As the main page for Alice states, it DOES have a long approach (18-miles round-trip) so be prepared (but it's SOOO worth the effort!)

A beautiful climb. Bring an ice axe to self arrest on snow fields on Hourglass Ridge. I could have used one!

Climbed Mount Alice starting form the Wild Basin trailhead. Great hike. Especially the Lions Lake area is beautiful and the views of Longs and Meeker from the trail are great. -- There was some snow on the route, which made the descend towards Thunder Lake muddy and slippery at times.

ahansen54Route Climbed: West Ridge Date Climbed: 4 August 2004  Sucess!

Climbed this mountain as part of a six day loop of the North and East Inlets. We started from the Upper North Inlet crosscountry zone (3M), dropped our packs at the saddle, hiked the peak, returned to our packs and descended to Lake Verna in the east inlet. This made for a long, but fun, day. Unfortunately, I submerged my camera in a river a few days before this hike, and therefore have no pictures. It would be a great day hike from either Lake Verna or the Upper North Inlet crosscountry zone.
