| Did the north summit from Crystal Lake off 550. About 3600 vertical in less than 2 miles straight up an avy chute that probably runs every year. Sweet views from the summit spiced up by the snow. | |

| Hayden Mountain actually has two ranked summits known as Hayden Mountain South and Hayden Mountain North. They don't combine well (difficult connecting ridge) so I climbed them on separate trips. 7/5/08 - Climbed Hayden South via the Richmond Pass trail. Went on to "T8" and hoped to continue on to "T9" but was chased down by an electrical storm. Nice half day outing. 10/26/09 - Climbed Hayden North from the Hayden Trailhead on US 550 (about 2 miles north of the Richmond Trailhead). Steep, efficient climb up a big avy chute. Snow's getting deep up high! | |

| As noted before, you're gonna need to keep your eyes open to find the trailhead. Nice trip though, saw an elk barrel down a near vertical wall that sits south of hayden peak. Highly recommend an ice axe if making the trip during spring time, the short traverse to richmond pass could make for a nasty spill if you aren't prepared. | |

| We had the mountain to ourselves on a beautiful fall day in the San Juans. The Richmond Pass Trailhead is a little tricky to find (GPS is helpful) and it is steep right from the car. Continualy climbing through a great aspen grove and then tundra. Very enjoyable hike. The traverse from the pass to the mountains summit ridge was interesting as well. The talus on the ridge was pretty solid and very grippy on the boots. There has been enough traffic on the slopes that the talus is somewhat compacted as well making the going a little easier. Very large summit with awesome views of Sneffles, Cirque and Potosi from there (and the rest of the San Juans for that matter as well). Awesome! | |

| Post holed a few times and lost the route in the snow a few times. Finally got stuck just before Richmond pass. It was a pretty day and I had the mountain to myself. I found a rock, layed down and admired the scenery above the timberline. It could have been climbed from a different route. There is a lake near the north end of Ironton park that shows a route into Full Moon gulch. That route would have avoided most of the snow. Richmond pass had pockets of decievingly deep snow. | |
