astrobassmanWinter in October  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 10, 2009

Couldn't get over the divide to meet my friend since the tunnel was closed, so I went up Pettingell. Very cold and windy, but a nice day. Had to avoid loaded spots above the lake.

Gareth"The Citadel" to Pettingell Peak Traverse  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2008

I climbed over to Pettingell from "The Citadel" with slowpoke. It was a long day and I made it even longer by nearly climbing to the summit of UN 13,215 before turning around due to nearby cloud development. Pettingell's North Ridge turned out to be quite a scramble!

Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2008

Climbed via ridge connecting with the Citadel. Continued down to Herman Gulch by following the divide (east ridge) down to the saddle below Woods Mountain. A long day!

Date Climbed: Jun 14, 2008

Me and "Asphazell" hiked up to Herman Lake at night with headlamps. We camped near the lake and started this climb at 5:30am. A cold morning and amazing glissade from summit to lake!

Date Climbed: Sep 8, 1985

There had been a snowstorm the day before, so it added a bit of winter to the climb. Enjoyed spending some time at Herman Lake after descending the south route.

SarahThompsonTraverse from the Citadel  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 8, 2006

Not sure why, but we traversed from the Citadel on an incredibly rainy day - the kind where it just rains steadily all day. We were wet but not cold enough to care. The traverse took a lot of concentration since the rock was wet and slimy. One 15 meter rappel was required to overcome a 5th class step.

We went up the east ridge, which involves some scrambling and route finding. We came down the south west ridge to return to Herman Gulch.

Morning snow hung around the summit all climb, couldn't see much in the snow and fog but it was an enjoyable outing none the less. I was supposed to be skiing Vail, but the lack of snow this month delayed their opening so the snow was actually welcome!

Date Climbed: Jul 8, 2007

First I hit point 13,418 and then continued up the S. slopes to summit. I descended the N. Ridge. Really starting to enjoy doing these peaks by myself. I didn't see anyone moving past Herman lake so I felt like I had the whole place to myself.

Super easy day.

BTW. . .if you stay on the ridge to descend or ascend the headwall, that sucker is 5th class! At least the way that I went down the crack was. Everything else seemed to be 2+. It was no more difficult than the 2+ Ridge on Edwards.

surprised that there was such a fine scramble on this peak. thanks goodness the rain held off long enough for one peak! guess the citadel will have to wait.

Only regret was that the scrambling portion wasn't longer. We were practically by ourselves in Herman Gulch. Funny how after Labor Day, everyone forgets there's still viable hiking.

This was one of those legendary fall days in CO. Not a single cloud. We started at noon, and had a perfect day.

Larry VRoute Climbed: East Ridge Date Climbed: 1 October 2005  Sucess!

Thanks for the good directions on the East Ridge route, Kane. Clear, warm day. Encountered first patch of snow at 12,400', and worked around bigger patches from there to summit. It's a nice climb, reminded me of Kelso Ridge on Torreys, only harder.

I didn't realize Herman Lake was such a popular destination. 71 people signed in at the trailhead today (prior to 3:00 p.m.)

Scott WisherRoute Climbed: South Slopes (modified) Date Climbed: September 4, 2005  Sucess!

Instead of ascending up the drainage on the north/east side of Hermans Lake, we decided to ascend straight up the southwestern face. This ascent made it more challenging due to the extremely loose talus the whole way up. To find my route, look for a drainage to the southwest of the route described by Aaron Johnson.

A great hike along a fun ridge. The climbing was mostly Class 2 with a few very short sections of class 3. The rock was good and the views great.
