| Came over from Arrowhead via the n.e. arete. This is such a fun route! Lots of class 3/4 scrambling on mostly solid rock. Descended to Stone Man Pass. Toughest 13er in RMNP. | ||

| Hounded by ominous clouds much of the day, but the weather held until we were back down to Black Lake. Good times. | ||

| Went up McHenry's from Bear Lake TH (Glacier Gorge parking full) via Black Lake. Had perfect weather window (miracle for August) and started at 11am and finished at 830pm. Used long route around Black Lake, but this was nice because terrain beneath Spearhead beautiful. Stone Man gully a pain, but not too long. Scrambling beneath summit was challenging and I certainly did not want to fall in certain areas (I think I missed the best line near the top of the gully). Saw elk wading in lakes as I came out at dusk. Great day. Inspiring. | ||

| By far the most interesting of the 7 peaks climbed that day. The class 4 from the Notch was very solid, no route finding needed. Even the direct ridge to stone man was enjoyable. Well worth it. | ||

| This might possibly be my favorite mountain in the park to climb. So much variety and adventure, plus the summit is really cool! | ||

| Completely missed the gully to the summit. Ended up on the SW ridge in wet 5th class terrain. Clouds were moving in fast and I was getting a little on edge. Great hike, made the roundtrip in 5hrs 40 min. Didn't see another person until the ledges below Spearhead. The clouds came in early and I had to forego Chiefshead. I'd have to say the summit has one of the best vistas in RMNP. You could see nearly every major peak in the park. | ||

| mpyle | A long but rewarding day ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2006 | |
| On the trail a little after 6:00. Went the long and left route from Black Lake, as was climbing solo at the time and was scared of the shorter/steeper route to the right. Shortly beyond Black Lake bumped into Mark from MN who had tried it previously, and we ended up climbing together to the summit. The final gully stretch was some of the most enjoyable climbing I've done. If only there wasn't so much darn hiking and scrambling to get there. : ) Maybe 4:45 up, and a sluggish 4:15 down over rain slickened rocks. Mark left my lagging behind in the dust on the descent from Stoneman Pass. | ||

| This was my 117th Rocky Mountain National Park peak and almost my last. Decending the snowfield back to Stone Man Pass I lost my iceaxe and started sliding headfirst. Fortunately a friend was at the bottom and caught me before I crashed into the rocks. | ||

| Mountain Jim that is an impressive feat. Clear across from Flattop to McHenrys. It's great to see someone who has respect for this beautiful peak. To me it seems like it gets overlooked. Everybody is all about Longs Peak. Which is obviously the monarch of the park, but McHenrys is mighty in its own right. Simply gaining Stoneman Pass is an adventure especially with the kind of snow it accumulates. It is much more complicated than say reaching the Keyhole on Longs Peak. The backside of the mountain is fine scrambling and to me was more exciting than on Longs. Plus you're not having to worry about people above you. (Trough) Have you done the arrowhead arete route? It looks exciting. | ||

| Wow the Triple Crown. What a day! I forget what order it goes in...guess whatever you desire. I've been up these peaks but all on seperate occasions. I love the hike past Lion Lakes and Snowbank on up to the Alice-Chiefs saddle. The day we climbed Hourglass Ridge we did it in absolute complete fog, socked in conditions. Chiefs Head ridge we were awed by the views. McHenrys was an epic day which I will never forget in which I nearly bit the dust sliding down a snow slope on the way down from Stoneman Pass. I believe we were on McHenrys a day before you. How was your traverse between Chiefs and McHenrys? I'd sure like to do the Triple Crown someday. I bet that was quite a taxing day physically. Congrats! | ||

| Climbed from Bear Lake via Flattop Mtn., Hallett Peak, Otis Peak, Taylor Peak and Powell Peak. Getting across The McHenrys Notch is the best part. I've had the pleasure of climbing this beautiful peak 5 more times since my first visit. | ||

| I just loved this mountain, and I knew I would from the first time I saw it on SP. My thanks to SP member smudge for posting the mountain and his rendition of the standard route. Our first view of the mountain last year on our Glacier Gorge recon trip inspired us even more. We started on the trail at 4:30AM and were at the base of Stone Man Pass by 9:00. We were on the summit at 11:15 and relished this exciting moment. The descent went very well and we gave Ellen a tour of Glacier Gorge by circling the basin and dropping down to Black Lake from the east. We were back at the car by 6:30. What a great trip! If you're planning on climbing this mountain, heed the advice of the other summit posters below and be sure to start before sunrise. This is not a mountain to brave a battle with the weather on. It's your lucky day, too. Peruse the pics below for a "mini-trip report" of our experience on this mountain. You might get a clue about that shortcut you've heard about in passing... Good luck! | ||

| This is quite the mountain and you need to be in good shape for this endeavor! The climbing is fun fun fun once you are past Stone Man Pass. Route finding was pretty easy as it is well cairned now. Just keep a sharp eye out for the cairns and well travelled places. Fantastic view of Longs Peak and the rest of the Glacier Gorge area. Fabulous mountain and a long day. Start early (and I mean really early). | ||

| Climbed this one with Colonalpyat. Our original plan was to ascend McHenrys via the standard South Face Route but when we got to Stone Man Pass we began entertaining thoughts of ascending the steep southeast ridge. Once we began the climbing didn't stop until we finally reached the summit. This was probably the steepest climb I have been involved with to date. A big thanks to Jim for leading this route, wouldn't have even thought of this route if I were going solo. | ||

| Climbed this one with Kane. My first trip to Glacier Gorge and first peak in RMNP. A great introduction to the area! Went up the crack on the west side of Black Lake and made our way up to Stone Man Pass via some loose terrain that's probably worse with snow and ice. Took a right turn at the pass and went up SE ridge to the top. Some steep climbing on that last section. I wouldn't have done it if I was by myself. | ||

| One of RMNP's greatest mountains. Stone Man Pass is still worth doing again and again, but I may look for some other routes as well. The scramble up the crack system Roach mentions to the right (west) of Black Lake is highly recommended. More fun and shorter than the standard hike up the ramp to the east. That is if you find the right crack, I missed it the first time! | ||
