YEMWest Ridge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 11, 2009

My favorite of the 3 eastern Olympic climbs this year. I camped at the lake and climbed up in the morning. It made for a much more enjoyable climb. I decided to save Skokomish for a return visit. This place deserves it!

amochkaA wet but fun day.  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 9, 2009

A very wet day, but interesting terrain and a fun group made it a good climb. A bit of routefinding, bush whacking and a lot of 'veggie belaying.' If there weren't trees on parts of the route, I have NO idea how we would have ascended a few of the muddy gullies we went up. Fun little pitch at the top. NO snow near the top or anywhere on the route. Fun salmon feast after.

Long day hike with Eric. Very hot weather and high humidity. Drank 8 liters of water. Still it was a fun scramble to get to the summit.

tleafLovely Day  Sucess!

Ken Russell, Steve Lowrie and I headed up the Putvin trail on a beautiful September morning intent on finding route 1 up the south couloir. We found a couple of "possible" animal trails but no markings so ended up taking the tried and true way trail to Lake of the Angels ( I secretly wanted to go the the lake again anyway). We headed up the ridgeline from the lake towards St. Peter's Gate and headed left below the cliffs to the west ridge. A little scramble later and we were on top. Lovely day. I had been up the mountain many years ago but couldn't see a thing.

NavySeabeeWest Ridge Route, Youbetcha!  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 27, 2007

Incredible climb on an incredible day. Low lying clouds and fog over Puget Sound dissapated just before the TH so I had magnificent views the entire way which included summit views of all the Cascade volcanoes and the ocean. First Olympic peak I have climbed since I moved to SoCal and man, have I missed it!

The crux of the route was crossing the snowfield below the summit block. Crampons and axe would have made it a sinch, but boots and trekking poles almost made for a 300-400 foot run out as I slipped on the way back across. A scary but solid bergshrund held my frantic grasp and prevented me from sliding to the bottom of the bowl. Challenging mountain that makes you earn your summit prize.

MountainjeffBoulder Creek Route
Date Climbed: Jan 28, 2007

Tried the less known route up from the abandoned boulder creek road. There was snow on the Hama Hama road, so I didn't make it all the way to the Putvin trailhead. Due to the amount of bushwacking and the extended hike I
didn't have enough time to summit. There was a large wet snow avalanch over the boulder creek road well below the timberline, so check the avalanch reports if you are climbing in the winter/spring.

with Austin. stood on the highpoint of my home county in a gathering storm, descended a beautiful way trail to LOA. A fun, rigorous climb. Berries are great this time of year.

Weather good. Lots of view! Couldn't have made it to the top without my support team; Trina Leaf and Steve Lowrie. We took yayoubetcha's advice and used the right hand route up the summit block. We think it is the best way.

The abandoned road makes a good alternate for the first 1.5 miles of trail. It leaves the Hamma Hamma Road about 1/4 mile beyond the Putvin TH.

Beware of the final sentence of the route description (I have submitted a change).

At the end of the description for the approach, it says " take a left trending 3rd class groove up the summit spire. " Whereas this will take you to the top, as I examined it. There is an much easier route with much less exposure. I noticed one of the summit log entries talked about the exposure and the people decided not to summit.

A better route description:

As the trail ends at the summit block, you will notice a 3rd class grove (large enough to climb throgh) trending to the left; this approach will take you to the top, but has exposure. The easiest way up is to stand in front of the summit block and look to the right. You will also see a narrow groove (few inches) to the right, currently marked at the base with a large cairn. Take this route up. After the initial 15 feet, it gets much easier to the summit.

July climbing conditions in March! Not a lot of snow but enough to work with. The directions on this website proved to be dead-on. Couldn't have done it without them. Second time up. Took 4 friends of wildly varying ability levels. Got'em all up and down.

Glad to finally get on top of this one!!! Probably the best climb I've ever done! One of the coolests parts was unexpectedly finding a summit box on top (The first one I've come across in the Olympics).By reading the log we were the first to summit this year but I doubt thats true. Weird and Chachie chachie I wish you could of been there!

Great Climb! we came 50 ft short of the summit. Not sure if we approached the block right. Ran out of time. Last 50 ft very exposed and a huge drop off. Hope to try again this winter or spring!!!

My wife and I climbed this pretty mountain on a semi-clear Saturday. We messed up on the approach and hiked too far on the trail before turning off towards St. Peter's Gate. Shirley's ankle was acting up (recent tendon injury) and so she stayed about 300 feet below the summit while I slogged up and tagged it.

As part of my quest to visit the highest points in each of Washington's counties, I invited my friends Dennis and Duane to make an attempt on Stone (Mason County highpoint). It was a fabulous day, too warm if anything, with clear air and perfect climbing conditions - lots of snow on the approach to the summit ridge. Nice climb!
