sarah.simonFrom Bush Mountain Camp, down Bear Canyon Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 24, 2009

Wow. What an awesome, open perch to take in fantastic views. We woke at Bush Mountain Camp, summitted Bush Mountain, then hit Hunter Peak on our way down to the Bear Canyon Trail. I could have stayed on this summit for hours, but the day wasn't getting any longer.

This was a nice place to eat lunch as I did a loop up the Tejas trail into the bowl and down the Bear Canyon Trail. The thing I remember most about this peak were all the birds flying around the summit. They weren't shy about buzzing me at all. It's also a cool place to spy people on the Guadalupe Peak Trail and summit.

Great View! Easy, pleasurable hike from the Pinetop backcountry camp.

Hands down, this is one of the most beautiful views in the great state of Texas! I watched the sun set on the 5th and rise again on the 6th from this lofty perch, and it was not an experience that I will soon forget; watching the sun rise over the clouds east of the range was amazing.

On a side note, Bear Canyon didn't seem too steep, though on the descent, my feet were letting me know that it's time to buy new shoes. Climbing it during the cool of the evening with wildflowers in bloom was enjoyable.

Ow man what a day. It was clear and not too much wind. A little chilly, but it was definitely worth it. The summit is a little small, but the veiws are breathtaking. I recommend this one.

A great way to close out the year. Summited with my husband around 2:30 in the afternoon. Saw more deer than people on the trail.

Did a loop - first up Bear Canyon and then down the Tejas Trail. Beautiful day, a bit of wind, but warm enough that shorts/t-shirt sufficed. Great view of the other high points in Texas and the surrounding land!

Going up Tejas and then down through Bear Canyon is a very cool way to see this summit. Definatly the "best view in Texas".

After climbing Guadalupe Peak 8 or 9 times this

was a very refreshing break. It's a great loop trail,

but Bear Canyon is a very steep descend. I definitely

recommend it!

My wifes first backpacking trip. We spent a cold night at Pine Top and summited Hunter and went down Bear Canyon.

An absolutely amazing view and delightful hiking. As good as it was, I would have enjoyed it much more if I hadn't been thinking about stepping on a snake the entire time!

I met only one person the whole day and his name, believe it or not, was Daniel Boone (no kidding).

A great loop hike! IMHO a better hike than Guadalupe Peak. Bear Canyon Trail is very, very steep by modern trail standards and in retrospect, I would rather climb it than descend it for my knees' sake. The Bowl is a very special place in Texas, and the view from Hunter Peak is great!

Ascending the incredibly steep Bear Canyon Trail was a personal victory, having been denied years ago on a backpacking trip. Hunter Peak is highly underrated, seldom visited, and arguably has the best views in the Guadalupes.

Great hike except for the fact that I forgot sunblock and got my royal once a year sunburn.

It was a foggy day, but the clouds looked awesome around the park. Tanya Musgrave and I made it to the top in pretty good time, stopping to take lots of pictures on the way. Nice view of Guadalupe Peak!

What a beautiful December day to climb Hunter Peak. The north wind made for a very clear afternoon with views all the way to Sierra Blanca Peak in New Mexico. A little chilly because of the wind on the summit but still not too bad.
