| Did an overnighter out of the Kibbie Ridge TH: Along Kibbie Ridge to Mercur Peak, Huckleberry Lake and Lower Penisula Lake, up to Haystack Peak, then camped below the Haystack-Schofield saddle during the most spectacular thunderstorm I've ever witnessed in my life. There were twin rainbows at one point, and then as the lightning started (strikes over Tower every few seconds) the sky turned red--if I were to shoot a video for Slayer's Raining Blood, this is the sky I'd imagine.
Tagged Schofield Peak the next morning, and hiked out via Otter Lake, Jack Main Canyon, and Moraine Ridge. Truly beautiful and underappreciated area, but a tough couple of days. Got back to my car around 9pm on Sun and slept somewhere along Cherry Lake Road before finishing the drive back to the Bay Area the next morning.
Wonderful trip. Haystack was very prominent from Mercur Peak, and views from its summit were as expansive as I expected. In my opinion, this peak belongs on the SPS List. |
