| Hiking with Troop 787 from Carrollton, Texas, our patrol of 7 was supposed to camp the first night at Gregory Bald. We had a late start and by 7:00 PM the Scout Master decided to stop for the night on the trail at a switchback. My son and I hiked up to the Gregory Bald campsite to look for water. We passed through Parson Bald on the way and encountered a large black bear while we were eating "his" blueberries. We rushed out of there and on to the Gregory Bald campsite. Not finding the water source (at Moore Springs Shelter: our map wasn't very good), we hiked back to our patrol singing loudly in the moonlight to warn away the bears. I found that hiking up that mountain with a full pack is every bit as taxing as hiking in the Rockies, only much more humid! |
