Date Climbed: Jul 5, 2009

We parked about 1/2 mile above Hinkey Summit. The girls and I had a great hike in perfect weather and the wildflowers were awesome, but it was a long drive.
No one else on the mountain, and hardly anyone else on the road.

Date Climbed: May 23, 2009

Parked at Hinkey Summit. A fairly short but interesting climb. First summit register entry of 2009.

A relatively straightforward route to the summit. We parked at the meadow near the weather station, as the road became too wet and marshy to continue. It took us less than an hour and a half to reach the summit from there. The register book was soaked, though it hadn't rained in some time.

This was a fun hike that broke up my trip to Mt Hood. It's isolated and rugged, just how I like my mountains!

surgentSecond HP in a day!

Hiked with Adam Helman of the county hp club. Our second of the day after Desatoya Peak in Churchill County. Nice hike, interesting summit blocks.

My first Nevada summit. I drove until I was blocked by snow(8200 ft), and camped the night before. I took my time and summited in a little under 2 hours. A pretty neat summit of pink granite. I thought 3 bench marks was a little excessive though. This is a really neat area once you get out of the valley where the highway goes. Lots of wildflowers! I had to share the summit with a lot of bugs I had never encountered before. There were millions of them the whole way up and back. Thankfully they didn't bite like the bugs on Warner Mountain the day before.

Took a quick hike with my old desert-peak-bagging buddy, Stan Wilkinson. We drove my Subaru a little past Hinkey Summit, and got to the peak in an hour or something like that. Staying on the very crest for the last quarter-mile keeps the boredom away. We even managed to not get shot by all the car hunters.

A fine 2X for me! Great fall colors, all are at peak, now. Left a new register book, and shot plenty of photos. Had to leave fast due to dark clouds and snapping noises. Under two hours to summit from Hinkey Summit, and not too long to get back, aside from stopping for more photos.

I have climbed this many times during all seasons, partly because it is only a 1 hour hike from one of my "work" locations. The south side offers some harder climbing if you feel the standard east ridge might be a little boring.

See Dean's post below. There's little to add. Short, fun climb on a very eventful Labor Day weekend. It was my first Nevada county highpoint, and it whetted my appetite for more hikes and climbs in the state.

rfbolton and myself had wanted to climb this peak since it was a county highpoint. We had just completed three other county highpoints, two in Oregon and one in Idaho and felt that Granite Peak would be a fun climb to do.

It did turn out to be fun. The area was extremely interesting and we did a loop drive, driving in from the north and exiting out though the south after climbing the peak. Cattle are everywhere in this area and we were somewhat amused when we found out that this treeless expanse was in the Humboldt national forest. I always thought that a forest meant trees but that was not the case here. Bob's Toyota 4runner made short work of the road and we were able to park at the end of the road. The peak itself was nothing but a scramble and Bob was up it in about 40 minutes. Great viewpoint however and on a clear day we might have been able to see forever.
