The fall color was great. I only saw a couple of others across Stewart Creek, climbing San Luis. Stewart Peak offers an amazing vantage point on the edge of the vast San Juan mountains!

Date Climbed: Sep 22, 2007

completed the long day(17.1 miles, 5290 feet) with a jaunt up stewart. tired legs really kicked in during the final upclimb from the saddle with point 13,795!

descent out nutras creek was beautiful, and gentle on the legs. had a sidehill for a short peroid after the creek overflowed the trail. final two miles along the road was gorgeous with the yellow aspens everywhere!

long, enjoyable day. can't wait for another!

slowbutsteadyOver Baldy Chato to Stewart  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2006

Car camped at Cebolla Trailhead. Trail initially hard to follow in dark(5:30am) even with flashlight. Once out of timber and with(sunrise), vision improved, following posts across willows, over B. Chato and along wonderful ridge to Stewart. Met only four other hikers who had ascended from Nutras Creek. Down at 4PM.

What a fantastic peak. Didn't see a soul on the hike. Really windy, but the pristine nature of the area made up for it. I really love the La Garitas.

slowbutsteadyRe: Route Climbed: Cebolla Trailhead Date Climbed: August 12, 2004

I have questions! Is the dirt road to the Cebolla trailhead suitable for passenger cars or is high clearence required? How far up the trail do you go before heading to Baldy Chato? How is the footing on the traverse ridge to Stewart Pk? Class 2 or less? Thanks. slowbutsteady e-mail baxphoto@outdrs.net

Awesome mountain. Absolutely no people and you can tell this is a rarely visited summit (only 8 people had signed the register in June). We only saw one cairn all day but the route is obvious. We went up to the right into a basin to hit the ridge and then came down Nutras Creek the whole way on our descent. We used some snow fields to avoid the loose junk on the lower portions of the ridge to make things easier (no ice axe or crampons needed however, the angle is mild).

Four of us drove the dirt road from Slumgullion Pass to reach the Cebolla Trailhead. The road is good and though long, the ride was not bad. We saw several elk but no other people during the hike. Stewart is easy to climb. The highlight of the hike was hiking the ridge between Stewart and Baldy Chato. It is spectacular. The summit of Baldy Chato is also easy to reach and recommended. Weather was perfect.

What an awesome day. Very few clouds and no threatening weather all day. The wind was brisk and it was quite cold at times, but overall a great day.

The La Garitas always offer solitude... after the Fourth of July I was eager to get away from the crowds that so often swarm the mountains closer to the Front Range. On this trip were 3 very good dogs, Moses, Raymond, and Sopris. A pleasant trip. The beaver ponds up Nutras Creek realy are remarkable. As I tipped out above Willow Mesa I saw a herd of 20 some elk.
