FlatheadJimN Face ice route  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 17, 2004

The ACC held it's GMC at Icefall Brook in 04 and a group of us, led by Sylvia Forest, made a bitchin long day of it from the camp, over to Forbes, up & down, and back to the base camp.

A stunning alpine ice route. Set Abalakovs to rap off as most snow was gone, very icy.

Mt Forbes is well-known for its extremely beautiful approach. It is also the highest mountain (3612 m) in Banff NP. We started around 10 am. The hike took us to the Glacier Lake, and after that there is no trail. After some bush walking and route finding we found a portage for the other side of the Glacier River near the Mons Glacier. We camped on the bank of the river just close by to the glacier. Beautiful night under the clear sky full of stars, but it was time to decide whether to continue on or to come back. The approach was longer than we thought, but the hike worth it. Allow at lease 2 day just to get to the base of the mountain.

Awesome climb. Gorgeous weather, complete with summit plume and all. Some icy sections, 50 degrees max, fair deal of fresh snow in places. Just enough to kick soft steps near summit. Didn't need to set any pro. Would definitely do again. Gorgeous area.
