| kteichert | False summit heaven! ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 19, 2009 | |
| Absolutely loved this hike. One of the more enjoyable hikes with some of the best scenery in the Wasatch Range. I have always looked at Provo Peak, wanted to conquer it, but never knew the best way to get to it. I tried to start from Utah Valley a couple times and always found myself lost somewhere behind Y Mountain tired and exhausted and running out of daylight, with another couple thousand feet to go. So my friend finally pointed me to the road that gets you right to the start of the ridge that climbs right up the face of Provo Peak. I'm so glad to have finally done it. It was fantastic and I am hooked on SummitPost now and being an intelligent hiker. | ||

| Hit the ATV trail at 6:15am. Made it to the summit right at 8am. Great trail, easy to find and easy to follow. I took some pictures and looked for the summit registry that I heard was in the cairn at the top, but was disappointed to see it was gone. I had a baggy, my FedEx pen, and a scrap of paper to start a new registry. Will return with a more permanent registry. August 19, 2009 I hiked up to Provo Peak again today and brought a permanent register with me that I placed inside the summit cairn. Hopefully that will last a while. It was a beautiful hike, we made great time, reaching the summit in a little over an hour and twenty minutes, and down in about an hour. We saw a group of deer down in the cirque on the backside of Provo Peak. Fun hike! | ||

| Rode my bike from Rock Canyon CG to the standard trailhead. I have no idea why the guidebook says that road is 4WD only. After stashing my bike, climbed to the summit then began the traverse to the east summit. The guidebook fails to mention how dangerously steep and loose the slopes are. It also doesn't mention that you must contour about 100 feet below the ridge saddle to avoid cliffs, adding even more vertical to the roundtrip. It's a pretty nasty traverse for just being "Class 2", but it's still the simplest way to bag E Provo Peak. | ||

| Nice hike up the West Ridge, trail a bit tricky to find near the begining. East Peak is an official peak and worth the trip. Full report with pics and map at http://www.willhiteweb.com/index_142.htm | ||

| Ryan and I decided to hit this peak up, we were lucky as the weather along the Wasatch Front over the past week has been bad, however today we got a break. We ended up making it past the avalanche portion on Squaw Peak Road without issues in the Jeep. We opted to climb the snow pack on the north side of the ridge much of the way up. Hit the summit in 1 hour 50 minutes from the trailhead. After spending over a half hour on the summit, we glissaded much of the snow pack on the north side back down. This is a great 11,000 foot Wasatch Peak, though a bit easy it's definitely worth getting there. | ||

| The road in was quite bad - there was an avalanche about 3 miles from the trail head, but we crawled over it in my buddy's pickup without too much drama. Lots of route-finding before we hit the ridge. After that, just a steep, rough climb in heavy winds (I estimated sustained bursts at 60 mph based on the "head out the window on the freeway" tests). Summited about 7 PM. It would help to be a little more conditioned than I am; I underestimated this one. | ||

| Hiked up the west ridge. The snow was pretty much gone except for a few patches. I had to hike 3 extra miles round trip because of a snow slide covering the road. | ||

| Heaton | Winter climb from Rock Canyon ![]() Date Climbed: Dec 31, 2008 | |
| Wife and I hiked up Rock Canyon and climbed up the west ridge on New Years Eve, my ninth time on the summit. We used snowshoes most of the way but cached them part way up the ridge and went with ice axes alone. We saw no one all day, but snowmobile tracks on the Squaw Peak Road made that part of the hike easier. The trip took from first light to dark. It was a beautiful white day! The false summits on Provo Peak used to drive me nuts. But I learned to watch the peak just south of the summit and not expect to be close till I was looking down on it! No more disappointments. :-) | ||

| With Brent, Christine, Dave, and Moogie737. Beautiful day and great views from the summit. It took 9 hr and 45 min and would have been even longer if Brent, Dave, and Moogie737 hadn't broken most of the trail the week before. | ||

| Sweet. went with my buddy matt. got to the dirt turnout on the road behind squaw peak. started up the obvious trail - NOTE: about 100-200 yards after you start, get off the main 4wd trail and start climbing! we didn't and ended up bushwhacking up to the ridge. going up took like 2:20 because we got lost at first; down was 1 hour. really pretty. fall colors. | ||

| Scott Wesemann | What a view! ![]() Date Climbed: Sep 22, 2008 | |
| With Steve and Brett Bohman. The fall colors were amazing and we did not see another soul. Once on top the great weather we were having instantly was gone, as a large cloud enveloped the mountain and proceeded to dump snow on us for the remainder of the hike. Traversed over to the East peak and the ridge is (BIGGEST CHOSS PILE IN THE WASATCH) horrible. Loose scree and rock and after we got onto the class 3 stuff, the rock was wet and dangerous, so we backed off and headed back up to Provo peak and then back down. It snowed on us the whole way back. what a fun hike. | ||

| Great views even with the haze. It was my brothers-in-law (age 14 and 12) first time at 11000 feet. They did great! Fun hike despite the bane of my existence: shale. Good workout, a little early route finding which mostly consisted of looking up and finding the ridge. :) | ||

| It was a nice time to drive the Squaw Peak road, which I'd never done before: everything was very green. A little bushwhacking above the old bulldozer track before finding the trail. Same thing on the way down. This route is a good, short workout, and it was cool to be on the highest thing between Timp and Nebo, but kind of anticlimactic after South Thunder the previous week, and the limestone scree is not my favorite hiking surface; this made me change my mind about scrambling the disintegrating ridge over to the East Peak. Guess I'm not such a peakbagger after all. That side-trip, nasty now, would have been fun on snow, but there was not much of that left, so I'd left my ice axe in the car. And ah, the sounds of nature, such as two-stroke engines and gunshots. I did enjoy the wildflowers a lot. Worth doing, but if I ever go back it will be winter. | ||

| Despite the fact that this hike nearly broke my spirits, once on top the views were fantastic. I watched as Ammon Hatch tried to solo to East, and made the decision to stay put based on how it was going for him (and the fact that I had no strength left in my legs). Good times. | ||

| peachey | Northwestern Ridge Climb ![]() Date Climbed: Sep 1, 2007 | |
| The weather was just perfect that day so I decided to make the trek up the peak. Somehow I missed the cairn turnoff along the trail and ended up blazing my own trail up the Northwestern ridge among the pines. It was slow going, but I finally hit the summit. What an amazing view!! The visibility was spectacular. The temperature at the summit was about 70 degrees with a slight breeze. It couldn't have been more pleasant up there. | ||

| I had a tuesday off so I headed for Provo Peak, one I had my eyes on for some time. I parked higher up and followed an atv track until it intersected the usual climbers trail. Steep in many places but the views were expansive and just got better the higher up I got. From the log I was the first one up there since Labor day. Strange that a great peak this close to major cities gets very little activity. The trail I found is good all the way to the summit and is worth looking for. | ||
