Date Climbed: Jul 5, 2008

Climbed via a grass chute south of the Truchas Lakes up to a SE ridge from Medio Truchas. Crossed a small snowfield near the Medio summit to a saddle on the North ridge of South Truchas. Ran face-to-face into a bighorn on the North ridge but otherwise had a great climb. Continued on to climb Middle (West) Truchas the same day and continued down the same route. No crowds at all, we saw about 5 other people the entire day.

The Rio Quemado basin must be the wettest spot in New Mexico. We braved stinging hail stormes, munched plump, wild raspberries and dodged Smurf sized mushrooms on the way to our goal. With storm clouds rolling in, we tagged South, Middle and Medio. We then stumbled down to the streams, ponds and meadows below and politely passed some high altitude grazing cows. Beef at 11,000 feet? Matt, who had spilled his mountain meal down his pants the night before (trying to keep warm while cooking...), seriously considered his chances of landing a steak dinner that night.
The rain fall in the area had the falls running at high volume. Very cool.

rockrat23 of the peaks in a day  Sucess!

My climbing partner and myself climbed three (all except North Truchas) in a day for a training run on Baker and Rainier. Wanted to get a heavy pack on us and get a little altitude before heading to the Cascades and these were the closest mountains to us. Not hard climb, (hike actually) but some incredible scenery and saw lots of sheep. Very long day with heavy packs.

jfrishmanIIIAwesome summit!  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 13, 2006

We came over S. Truchas from E. Pecos Baldy Lake. No snow and great weather on the ascent. I found the view from the Middle-Medio ridge into Quemado basin way more of an eye-popper than the view from S. Truchas. We descended Medio's north ridge, and encountered a lot more postholing than expected on the way back from Truchas Lakes.

I did all three with Bill Herbert in 1998 , I think. We were both living in Las Vegas , New Mexico at the time.

I believe we started at the Rio Quemado, there was an acequia that we walked along for a few miles. Doing all three from there took 12 hours.

At one of the summits we could both feel electricity on our fingertips so we descended a valley we did not come up. It added a couple of hours to our hike.

Bill said it was the best day hike he had ever done.

This is one of the greatest climbs to be found! The first adventure is finding the trailhead which is due east of the town of Truches. After that its several miles of hiking along the gorgeous Rio Quemado

stream in a beautiful forest up to and past

a waterfall into the most beautiful basin below the

Truches peaks. It a mixture of meadows and forest

and many virgin campsites. In ten trips I rarely saw

another person! I climbed all the peaks several times

from this basin. It is one of the few climbs that I could

never get enough of ! No one ever screwed with my

vehicle but it would have been worth it anyway!

Summitted South Truchas, Medio Truchas, and Middle Truchas. The weather was touch and go at times but held long enough to summit all 3 peaks.
