seeksitMade the best of a bad weather day in paradise  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2009

Remnants of Hurricane Felicia blowing through Kaua'i today brought a lot of clouds and showers, so we were looking for a short hike to squeeze in. This was it. Very humid day and muddy trail, but lots of good views down over the Waimea River and beach and our hotel in Kapa'a. We're having a great time here. Did the helicopter tour circling the island on Monday: awesome experience!

I was there. Might as well go up it. Favorite part was dining on the strawberry guava along the way. mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

This is one hot and humid mountain in the middle of the day, but it would be a pleasure to be up on that airy ridge at dawn.

Nice humid hike up the West trail. Regarding the fermenting berries: I concur.

No one has mentioned that in September there are several hundred thousand fermenting/rotting berries (sandalwood berries or guavas?) on the trail. The smell is overpowering. Overpowering in another way is the very narrow knifeblade of ridge betwen the forehead (or maybe nose?) and the nose (or maybe chin?)of the sleeping giant, the true summit. My wife of 2 days declined to join me.

Pretty sweet views at the top. Nice easy stroll got rained on pretty good towards the top, as well.

Hiked this with my kids after a heavy rain - we pretty much had to throw our shoes away cuz they were covered with red mud that stained. We picked awapuhi and took it back to the hotel to wash our hair. Lots of guava bushes but no ripe fruit. Wish to hell I'd brought a camera!

Climbed with my brother and dad on our christmas vacation to Kauai. Fun climb with good views, a nice change of vegetation from the Washington forests I'm used too.

Ran up the trail to the picnic table, then climbed up the (somewhat) exposed rock to the top. The part past the picnic area is described in guidebooks as scary and treacherous, so a few folks just stopped there. Too bad. The rocks aren't THAT difficult, and the view is magnificent from up there! Good views of King Kong, too.

This was a strenuous hike, the trail rose steeply right up to the top. Enjoyed the climing at the end. Great views all around.

Stopped in Kauai on the way back from Singapore and Thailand to visit an old friend I grew up with in Portland and who now happens to live in the shadow of this peak. Needed to go climb something so ran over there and gave it a shot. Finally found a trail and was pleasantly surprised... Good views of the coastal towns. Nice little peak.
