| I went up the Punta della Rossa from the Rifugio Vittorio Sella until about 3540 metres heighth. I don't know what it looks like today, after all the glacial retreat - all of this was so many years ago! - but back then, in order to continue to the summit, one would have had to step onto the glacier, and as the trail crossing the ice was very thin, the ice hard, the slope very steep and I had no crampons, I decided to halt at that particular point. It was spectacular all the same! What a view to the entire Pennine Alps plus the Mont Blanc range standing parade! And looking in the other direction, as the weather was so clear, one could even make out the Maritime Alps just behind the summit of Gran Paradiso! |
