I climbed the middle couloir (or finger) with crampons and ice ax. Found some ice mid-August but mostly could avoid it. Wonderful snow conditions altogether. Boy, was it steep! You surely don't want to fall - no runout. Great route description here. 3:50 a.m. start from Glacier Basin Campground, topped out at around 10 a.m. then also visited Ptarmigan Point and Hallett Peak, descended the trail and reached Bear Lake at 1 p.m.

Quite desolate, poor visibility. Tried for Hallet, but had to turn around.

Great moderate half day hike!!! Going the additional .3 miles and 400 ft elevation to Hallett Peak is very well worth the effort. The tundra is EXPANSIVE in this area of the divide!

A friend and I went up this for his first snow climb of the year. What a great route! We carried only crampons and ice axes. There is no need for any pro as long as you feel comfortable with your snow climbing skills. I am already excited to do the dragons tooth next

We reached the summit after battling through waist deep snow on the way up. Did not use any snowshoes due to our experience on the way to Glass Pond 4 days earlier. When we reached the summit the weather seemed to turn bad for a short time. However, once we started to descent, the sun returned. Great day!!

Intended to solo hike Flattop and Hallett. Got to summit of Flattop, about 3:30 or 4:00 , wind and cold began to assault summit.Took some pictures and turned around. Once back down to the rock outcropping, that is the 12000 ft point, the weather improved. Did not feel like repeating the postholing procedure.

Easy hike in the summer. Tried the Ptarmigan fingers during the winter, high winds forced retreat.

ChrisRoute Climbed: Part of divide traverse Date Climbed: July 2002  Sucess!

This was kind of an afterthought on the way down to Bear Lake after a 4-day Continental Divide traverse from Milner Pass to Bear Lake.

Nice views of Hallet and Notchtop.

Had a great day climbing the standard route up Flattop, and also decided to head over to Hallett Peak. It was a great warmup for my first 14er the next week (Quandary).

I hiked it with my baby sister. It was cold and windy and we shared the summit with a herd of bighorn sheep. I brought a pair of snowshoes but didn't use them at all -- I ended up carrying them (and my sisters) the whole time.

I climbed this mountain as an overnight trip with my friend. we started around 6:00 at night and had a hard time navigaiting the maze they call a trail. I think we walked about 2 miles before we saw the sign that said "Flattop 4 miles". other wise this was a fairly easy hike up.

This hike is so easy you can do it in Tevas! I forgot my boots the day we did this hike. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking uphill in the Tevas. The downhill wasn't so pleasant down the Tyndall Gorge.

Makes for great loop hikes of endless variations and serves as a great launching point for many epic possibilities. Our recent climb of Hallet Peak was done from Flat Top, then we descended the Tindel Glacier gorge (see Hallet Peak page). Easy hike, awesome views of RMNP's incredible high country. Any climb of this mountain is a guaranteed blast.
