Old IckabodRoute Climbed: East Ridge Date Climbed: July 2004  Sucess!

I looked at this mountain a hundred times from Highway 285 before heading to the summit. From Georgia Pass, it was a short rocky scramble. There was a small cornice at the top of the ridge that made for some great photos. I'll be back in the winter some day.

Great route once you gain the ridge. In an attempt to avoid private property, I found myself on less than favorable terrain. The scree slope was about 1500 vertical and continually got steeper and more loose. That stuff defies gravity somehow.

A nice steep, but rocky scramble to an exciting summit ridge. While on the summit we were visited by a mountain goat. He descended the steep south face; we opted for the SE ridge. The problem with this ridge is that it lead far away from the Michigan Creek Road and there are some nasty willows between the rocky bottom of the ridges and regaining the road.

colintRoute Climbed: South ridge up, east ridge down (form Jefferson creek) Date Climbed: July 2004  Sucess!

We made this fun short climb quite a bit longer (~12 miles) by adding an approach from Jefferson creek trailhead. In my opinion this adds a lot of beauty and enjoyment to the experience, along with a little more work. Cool summit ridge.

A good one. Climbed with Kane and didn't know if we were going to make it until the very last ten feet. Met Jon, Sopris, and Raymond on the way down. A surprising conclusion to a surprising day.

Several years ago I climbed this great peak a couple times...once with my husband, Jay, and once alone. Really great views, quite a pile of rocks! Actually, we met while working on a Colorado Trail Crew in that area way back in 1989.

Date Climbed: Jun 17, 2006

June 1994: Vern and I began our training early for what would later be our third and successful attempt at climbing Capitol Peak. Mount Guyot was an early season climb and we enjoyed it very much. The mountain sees little traffic and your solitude is almost a certainty. This is a great mountain for any time of year unless there is high wind or very deep snow and dicey winter conditions. The steep slopes of Guyot are unimpeded, anchorless and avalanches on the mountain are common, and are quite often visible from South Park. We had a beautiful, cloudless and brisk day for our climb. I recommend the mountain to anyone needing to escape crowded areas. Guyot will please you to no end. And yes, as Kane says-what a view!

June 2006: Climbed the northwest ridge route with the IU Trekkers. Great day, climbed and descended FAST! Awesome on top-great sunshine and warmth (once we were out of the ever present wind). Finished off with beer and pizza in Frisco. A perfect day in Colorado's Rockies!

KaneRoute Climbed: East ridge Date Climbed: 1-18-2004  Sucess!

Yesterday Jim Haley and myself headed out to the Front Range. We knew a few days ago the weather would be good so we set our sights on Mount Guyot (13,294-ft.) Having hiked in the LCW many times over, the one mountain that really stands out to the north and really shows its prominence is Mount Guyot. Its classic pyramid shape is undeniable descending hwy 285 from Kenosha Pass. We had been looking at this one for a long time.

We selected the East Ridge for a few reasons; first, we new we had a nice road to follow up to Georgia Pass. Thus the approach would be easy, especially when we found the road to be nice and consolidated from all of the snowmobile traffic. From Georgia Pass we would start the climb. Second, we knew the east ridge would be fairly wind scoured from the prevalent northwesterly winds, thus less snow to deal with. When climbing in January you need to take into account the possibility of avalanche danger. Third, we knew the views from the east ridge would be inspiring all day.

From Georgia Pass (11,500 ft) we started our ¾ mile-1, 800-ft ascent to the summit, pretty darn steep!

During our research of this mountain we knew there would be a possibility of a nice snow cornice do deal with to make the final summit. This weighed on our minds all day but we kept pushing. Our mind set was to go as far as we could and just see what happens. Jim had made the golden rule that we wouldn't ascend any snow slope that exceeded 30 degrees so while we were getting close to that snow capped summit we had our doubts whether we would make it. We were both ok with the idea of not making it.

Once we arrived at the cornice Jim measured the snow slope to be at 35 degrees and since the snow was in dangerous condition for kick stepping we decided to look for another way around this spot. During our ascent we had spotted a place about 150-feet below were we could cross the slope and climb a class 3 rib back up on the other side of that slope. After climbing the rib of rock we had to do an interesting 8-10 feet traverse across the top of a steep/intimidating gully to reach the summit. We just took our time, and before we knew it we were on the summit of Mount Guyot! What a view.
